wel I'm pretty sick of the constant wheelies and stuff while I'm climbing things like dunes(giant sand piles) because the truck just flips over...is there any way to make it just front wheel drive? (Not permantly)

I'm thinking if you take out the rear dogbone it's not gonna be able to send any power to the back because the dogbone that turns the rear diff is removed....the remaining front dogbone will turn the front diff making the truck front wheel drive..

ill see... its not permanant i just want it for dune(giant pile of sand)bashing so i don't flip off and break something..

thats right when you want it back to AWD just put the rear dogbone back in and back to AWD the truck goes...😱)

No, I found this out when I snapped my rear centre dogbone, I was driving round front wheel drive for the rest of the day...quite different to control when the power is only going to the front mind so take it easy for the first 5 mins...It will solve the wheelie problem for sure..

Have you thought about loosening the slipper a little bit? I'd try that before I started taking parts out...

ya but then i have to retighten the slipper every five minutes and tha involves taking th engine out

Ok, first the main drive from the trans is solid. So both front and rear have the same power distrobution. It'd be awesome to change that, but either way, solid is more durable.

Second, going to front wheel drive is going to suck bud. Trust me. Once you try it, you're gonna hate it. The main fact is that there isn't enough weight up front for the wheels to grab. It's going to spin like nothing else, and you're gonna end up getting really angry. I've had many grub screws in the rear outdrives snap. I know what FWD is like, and spinning on pavement like that, it's horrible.

Second, best idea, as bmc said, loosen the slipper. This way, the initial torque won't be delivered straight to the wheels. This will reduce the wheelies a TON, and also give it less acceleration.

Want a really good idea? It requires taking out the diffs. Put some 50-70k diff lube in the front diff, then run 20-30k in the rear. More grip in the front. I'm going to be running 80k up front and 60k in the rear first to see how it works. I'm probably going to end up hitting 100k up front and 90k in the rear, but I want to try 60/80 first. This method will give you a bunch of options, and having the rear slipping more and the front more "locked" will help greatly with climbing. 🙂

Hope this helps out Nate. 🙂

Taking the engine out? You shouldn't need to take the engine out. Just loosen it a little at a time (no more than 1/8). If you've got to keep tightening it down, your nylon nut is worn out.

MAN i wish my savage was still that clean! anyway only my back diff is locked with 50K oil...is that my problem? should i unlock the back and only lock my front?

If you have front wheel drive only, this will put a lot more stress on your front diffs increasing the chance damaging something (pinion gear etc). Loosen the slipper, or change the gearing if you can. This will minimize the wheelies but not get rid of them.

Tom, your truck is too clean, get that thing dirty!

50k won't lock the diff .. Loosen the slipper like was said .. That is your best best .. or put some weight up front ... You run w/ just FWD and you WILL strip your gears in a matter of seconds

ya i have to agree with everyone, don't start taking things out to get front wheel drive only it really will run crappy like that and will be extremely hard on your truck!! experiment with diff fluids as was said, this is the proper way of doing it it will make a huge difference and by putting more power to the front then the rear by different wt diff fluids it will cut down on the wheelies!!

+1 for AOD, People forget that the savage does NOT have a center diff. But did something change? I have always been running WAY less weight in my diff. I'm talking about between 5k to 10k . When did we start using 50k or even 90k...

Am I missing something here? I'm not 100% sure on this but at 90,000 weight, you might as well lock them.

But I do agree with the post, locking (or lockish ) diffs will increase your ability to climb or crawl up hills.
