gearing recommendations for savage 21 with 5.9 engine

Hi Savage Ppl..

just got bitten by the savage bug, so i decided to buy a 5.9cc hpi engine and mount that into my savage 21 truck. Just wondering what gearing you would recommend for the spur and the engine ?

note i still have the standard 2 speed tranny and no othermods

17/47 issue

I have the 5.9 in my savage x. It had the 17/47 gearing and recently I had changed it to 15/52 gearing.
Some of the previous issues were that the 5.9 revs are lower than the 4.6 so therefore I couldn't get the tranny moving fast enough to shift. Your situation is alot different from mine though. I have a 3 spd with a taller third gear, 40's series tires and alot more weight than the average stock savage. 17/47 might work for you. Since my gearing change to 15/52 I have been getting the performance I desired. Good luck.

Hey There,

I called HPI earlier today and they recommended that i do a 52/16. So i'll give that a go and post up the results... i'll probably end up putting a 3spd in it anyway down the track. One thing he also told me to do is to upgrade the spider diffs and a metal case for them as these apparently give way later on..

money i've spent so far, probably would have been better off just buying the Savage XL! haha oh well.
