My XL have a problem.
It takes off like it should in first gear and changes to second gear but it's only revving and not pulling, when I release the trigger a bit it changes to third gear and pulling normally again.
Have I got a Gearbox or a Clutch problem??
What must I do??

The nut on the end of the spur gear shaft, tighten it up all the way then back off 1/8th of a turn. Some, including myself prefer theirs tight all the way now without backing it off.

I run mine tightened as well. It should be fine as long as you don't land jumps while on the throttle. That yanks on your drive train pretty hard, and thats what the slipper is there for, to prevent big shocks to the drivetrain parts.
 
Ok, I have tightened the slipper nut and also adjusted the gear change between 1 and 2 gear a bit.
The problem is still the same.
What do I do now??

One thing that hit me when I opened the gearbox to adjust the slipper nut was that the gears are very "loose" on the axle.
The bearings are fine.

Maybe the OWB in the tranny is going. I think someone else here just had that happen. Weird that it would spin in second but then grab again in 3rd when you let off. Try putting it on a stand or just holding up in the air carefully, and run it through the gears. What does it do with no load on it? Does it shift through the gears correctly? You can sort of tell if one gear shift is too soon or too late by doing this with about half throttle and just trying to judge the timing of the shifts.
 
owb stands for one way bearing and it is possible that it could be slipping but if that was the case then it would try to do it threw all the gears so with that you may want to check the clutch shoes because they may grab just enough to get it rolling but may slip at a higher rpm.

Ok, I was thinking of that when I looked at the clutch bell and saw it was a bit black, most likely from overheating.
I will check tomorrow and post a reply.

I have stripped the clutch, but it's difficult for me to say if the shoes and springs are ok or not due to I've got nothing to compare with. A friend will try to source the parts in South Africa and bring up to me in Zambia on Wednesday. Will post the outcome then.
Is there any better replacement parts for the XL's clutch I can buy to make it last better?

By the way, how does the gear changes work??
What does the OWB do??
Can I have a problem if the adjustment to gear 2 has been adjusted to much clock wise??

Yes when you tighten the ajustment screws (clockwise) it makes that gear shift later but if you tighten it too much it will lock out second gear and it will just shift straight from first to third gear and not use second at all. The OWB is what allows the tranny to spin freely in one direction while grabbing and turning your drivetrain when spun in the other direction.
 
Hi, its my first post here. And i have been reading on the forum almost the last 3 hours so see if anyone have had the problems i have with my Savage XL. And i found this post describing the same problem i have.

Sometimes when i have 1/2 throttle or so and the car gets a little up to speed it wont shift it just revs. I loose the throttle a little and it shifts gear as it should. I have tightened the slipper nut, but not as much as i can and loosened it 1/8 turn. So i prolly have to try tighten it more and see what happens.

Did your issue go away anders? what did you do?

My problem is not yet solved and is not exactly the same problem as yours as I understand. My car is taking off nicely and changes to no 2 gear nicely. Then suddenly it stop pulling and only revving the engine. Once I release the trigger it catch gear 3 and pulls like normal again. I have changed the clutch shoes and tried to adjust the 1 to 2 gear change but without result.
I just received the slipper clutch pads made of fiber (are they good, somebody?) and want to try if that is the problem. I suspect the pads are damaged by engine cleaner.

I think you have to adjust the change from 1 to 2 gear which is a simple procedure and can be done without dismantle anything. It's clearly shown in the manual if you should turn clock wise or anti clock wise, I can't remember.

i have tightened the slipper nut as much as i can now didnt see any difference in the slipping, still slips for me. Did you get the new slipper clutch pads anders? tried them? guess i have to take a look at my slipper clutch pad and see if there is any wearing and after maybe take a look inside the transmission?

don't think its too rich, it gears and all, but sometimes it slips and i have to release the throttle a little and it grips again.
Anyway i looked at the slipper clutch pad and it was very polished, is it supposed to be polished and very smooth? i have ordered new slipper clutch pads just in case.
 
they normally come out looking smooth, try a new one and see if it helps, if it doesn't then it could be the gear changing mechanism inside the trans
 
before i reinstalled the slipper clutch pad i used fine sandpiper to rough it up a little in hope that maybe it wouldnt slip so easily, but it still slipped on me today when i ran. So I'm not sure what it is? In order to adjust how/when 2nd gear should shift i have to take the whole transmission out? easy operation?
 
Never ending problem

New clutch shoes & springs, new slipper clutch pad, slipper adjusted to the bottom. Problem is still the same.
What is the factory setting on the adjustment on the tranny.
If that does not help, what is the next step in founding the fault.

HPI had a bad batch of XL 3 speed OWBs. Contact them for warranty parts. As Squeaker said. the owb locks the trans to the output shaft. If it slips it will do what you are describing.
