Instead of pull starts, rotostarts, etc.. Why not just make a hex shank that comes out the back where a drill can be attached and start the motor that way? Wouldn't that be so much easier?

but, then u don't get the speed and tourge of the rotostart backplate. the backplate itself isn't much of a problem. it only spins while being cranked, to save wear, and it's just 2 gears

When I had my 25, my one way bearing went bad, I chucked the crank in a drill and it started just fine. That was 10 years ago, I think it was a 14 volt craftsman. My dads Milwaukee electric would roll it over no problem. I'm just saying, that was one of the reasons I didn't care for nitro. Truck did run darn good though.

Never thought about something like that, but do you see where I'm coming from though? That is a tenuous piece though, wish I had that back then.

I would think the reason would be because not everybody has a drill that can trun the motor fast enough. I start my truck with a 9v impact. if I didn't have the backplate, it wouldn't turn the motor fast enough. and a 14+v drill is a little too expensive for hpi to provide most likely. the rotostarter with the backplate cranks the engine very fast, so it starts the truck easy. plus, the rotostart uses a 7.2v NiMH/nicd stick pack, wich was (and still is) very popular when the rotostart first came out. I can see where ur coming from, but u have to think of the general consumer, which my not have the resources to start a truck like that.

Surely most hobbyists have a drill around, I understand not everyone has the craftsman catalog of tools, but a drill. Not being a jerk, I do see what you mean though. I just think so e things are made harder than they should be.

u'd be surprised. not everybody who own a savage is a hobbyist. I know a lot of people who have a nitro, and don't own any tools other than a screwdriver, 4v impact, and hammer. its sad

Not surprised rcnut! Many RC hobbyist, Planes, boats, helis, multirotors, etc etc don't even have the needed tools! Lest alone know how to use them or epoxy even.
Most I have met are hobbyist in a recreational sort of way...and then there are hobbyist who spend more money upgrading and modding then what the stock actually cost....lol....like me,,hehe!

But I think a rotostart is lighter then a drill...haha! I'm waiting for my last OWB to fail and then it's the permanent Locked Nut mod to the shaft. I run an F4.6 so the mod is possible.

I didn't mind the drill, personal opinion. Now I do understand how forums are a small part of the world, the diesel forums are no different.

But, that's amazing to me that alot of people wouldn't even have some basic hand tool's.

I live in Singapore and here, most call them by names based of direct translation from another language. Example would be a phillips head will end up X head or Cross head or Star head...lol!
But yeah most friends I know would rather call an expert in for some basic Home Improvements. Nothing beats having a Large Set of Good quality Tools in the house. My Cordless HP Hammer Drill was the best investment...haha! Feel like Duke Nukem when I walk around the House making holes!

I use a pullstart, but they used to have the Tiger drive for most common backplates and I believe it allowed you to use a drill

I can use a drill with a rotostart. he want's to get rid of the backplate altogether

I believe he wants to get rid of the plastic housing, the backplate is the aluminum piece on the back of the motor that supports the rear of the crankshaft, can't get rid of that.
