hi. I'm thinking about getting a savage x ss to play with.

i have a few questions.

1. do i just need the TVP and rear dogbone to make an XL length?

2. is the only thing that make the XL wider an axle extender?

3. are there upgrades which allow the wider hex axles, and also have a proper wheel nut instead of a nyloc?

4. will the hard anodized big bore shock bodies work on the plastic big bores?

The answers to all those questions is Yes...
when using wider hexes you have to remember that using a hex that is wider than stock will put excessive loads on the bearings so i would recommend using the HPI 17mm normal hex with an offset wheel so loads on bearings are more normal

i wonder if i would be better off getting the RTR because it already has big bores, rotostart, servos, ect... ?

i also prefer the HPI orange VS the hpi purple theme. are the few SS upgrades worth it?

I always prefer a kit over a RTR, unless the kit is that much worse. You will likely replace atleast the steering servo in the RTR. If you already have radio gear, the X SS allows you to simply buy another receiver and servos to your taste to use with them. I prefer the K4.6 in the X SS versus the F4.6 in the RTR. The K tends to have more low end grunt, while the F has a little more high end. So if you are a basher the K is a better choice. Also color scheme is replaceable/ update-able, so don't let that worry you.

Lots of pros and cons to either kit. I went with the X SS years back and have always enjoyed it.

so if i buy an x rtr, i can just get the aluminum body and have the same thing as the HPI "precision" shocks?

Spur gears and glow plugs? It is pretty tough. I have run almost 3 gallons and I broke my body, the pipe and front body mount. The spur gears where my own fault. Tighten the slipper clutch all the way with the bigger tires.

Get some locktite

I bought a screw set from Dollar Hobbyz where they part kits out. Its 130 some screws from the chassis of the truck and the tools.
