i have a savage X 4.6 i bought brand new about 3 months ago. yesterday i had it out running it around and all of a sudden it reved out of control with the radio set to the brake position. so i managed to get my hands on it right away and get it shut off.

today i took the engine out and started to inspect it and the carburetor.

after inspecting it i found nothing wrong so i clamped it in my vice and started it up; for a second or two it idled fine but then again it reved out of control. at first i though something may have jammed my throttle open but after doing the vice run i made sure everything was closed. i shut the engine down before it blew up and reset all my needles but now I'm afraid to start it again.

any suggestions?

thanks
Justin

Sounds like either radio interference. But you said you also done this with it in a vice I'm asuming no radio or servo connected to it with it in a vice so I'm thinking its way to lean giving it a really high reving rpm. But don't put it in a vice and start it. With out any resistance it will stress the engine. And the rpms will go through the roof. If put it in the truck. Set the truck up on a stand start it n watch it see if the rpms go nuts again n watch the servo. Might be bad connection or picking up something. Might be a bad o ring on the hsn. It might be walking on you from the vibration of the motor. With it up on a stand you can watch it closely and see exactly what it does when it happens. Good luck. Let us know what happens and what it is.

Sounds lean to me. Will it start at idle or do you have to crack the throttle/carb slide ? what is the slide gap at FULL closed (pushing it in)

ok heres where i am now. i have my truck completely re assembled now with all carb settings back to stock. i had to replace my motor mount a few weeks before i had this trouble because i had a bad crash and broke it off. when i took the motor out this time i also realized the motor plate (105896) was bent slightly so i replaced that too.

now. first problem. my clutch bell is rubbing my brake pads. i had to space up my motor mount to clear the pads and to get my clearance correct between my clutch bell and trans. i don't understand why it can be lower now, its suppose to be the same parts. I'm afriad to really use it because the mount bolts arnt long enougt for my liking and I'm afraid they will strip.

second problem. it may be minor but i may as well ask seems I'm here. my engine doesnt rev anymore, but will only stay running with my glow plug ignitor on it. i was thinking, maybe a bad glowplug or something because i did give my idle screw a few turns and it didnt change...

thanks
Justin

Did you do a thorough inspection of the engine block? Sounds like maybe it's cracked. Check carefully around the mounting tabs.
That would explain the lean conditions and the misalignment.

First, we need to rectify this issue. Need to get the spacers out of there. I'll help you diagnose this problem, but you need to post a couple pics.

this sounds more like a tuning issue to me. sounds like the settings are too rich so that the plug and compression of the motor cannot fire all of the fuel and needs the assistance of the glow ignitor.

if your plug was bad, the motor wouldnt stay running or fire with the glow ig on.

First, which motor is in your savage? lets see a pic.
Second, when you recently adj your needle settings, where did you adj them to?

ill get pics soon. as for motor, 4.6 and when i changed my settings i set them all "flush" which is supposed to be the stock settings

ok so i checked my truck out and one of the mount tabs is broke. i cant believe i missed it before but i guess thats all i can do. i took the top off my motor and inspected my cylinder sleeve and it looks to be scared. so I'm into a good job. whats the chances i can get this covered under warranty?
