what brand are the CVDs you own? or do u own a set of cvds?

are you looking for these for the stock hpi dog bones?

Hi,

I am not even sure what cVD's are, I have the stock dogbones, one HD and one regular, I do have a set of those shafts that have U-joints but they wont work with my brakes, I guess these are CVD's. https://www.hpisavageforum.com/forums/showpost.php?p=30730&postcount=14

I haven't installed them, well because I haven't broken the stocks ones yet and, well the rtr I have the hex the brake disks slides over its center is too small for these to fit in, I do have an SS I haven't tried yet.

these are the only ones I have ever seen, who else makes them?

thanks, I didn't realize they were CVD's

yea the stock dog bones don't have boots, and they will still perform well without boots.

the link u provided, those things look weird, cheap and week

Wister, IMO stick with the heavy duty dogbones and cups. When they wear out, change them. CVD...constant velocity can be much more maintenance and the I've broken more crosspins than I'd like to talk about. I actually have some cvd's left because I'm slowly going back to the bones. My .02

listen to his advice, i've never ran cvds, i've never needed to. you will be much more happier sticking with the stock dogbones

I'm not aware of any dogbone/cup boots in existence, but that doesn't mean they don't exist. I'd suggest NOT greasing the cups, actually. In an exposed environment like that they'll only collect dust and dirt, eliminating any lubrication advantages from the grease and probably making it worse that it'd be greaseless.

I've been running dogbones for five years, never greased a cup, and have never suffered significant damage in the area that could potentially be protected by grease. The dogbone pins and slots in the cup will wear out first!

Hi,

They do make them, you can see them in the link in the link in the first post of this thread. I found some on ebay, haven't put them on yet.

I have been greasing the cups just because that's what the instructions say, but I do have a problem keeping them clean, I live in south FL and everything is sand, so you can imagine. I plan on pulling them apart and cleaning all of the grease/sand mixture out of everything then installing the boots with clean grease to see how they hold up.

thanks for the info, Are you one of the SMF guys? I just got in the hobby a few months ago and acutally made my first purschase from you guys a week or 2 ago for some alu servo horns and 2 tach sensors for the nomadio, actually I am still waiting for 1 sensor to arive. In any case I am really sorry to see your store close, an wish you well in whatever you do in the future.

John

Hey John,
Sorry, somehow I missed that first link to the boots, those are pretty cool! How do they "latch" onto the drive cups, do they just hang onto the back edge? Be sure to let us know how they fare.

I hear you on the grease, I've seen it recommended in more than one manual.

Yeah, I'm Bruce, I basically run the SMF Store. Sorry about the speed/tach sensor, we're still waiting for that item as well! Our supplier is out of stock, they're backordered from Nomadio. We'll let you know as soon as they're available. If you wish to cancel that portion of your order, just let me know.

Thanks for the well-wishes! What I plan to do in the future is get back into the HOBBY side of R/C! Running the store is fun, but it takes a lot of time, so much that I hardly ever run my cars and trucks anymore. I'm dying to get back to the fun of the hobby.

No problem on the sensor, when ever is fine. actually it is just an extra one, I really needed the magnets, I ended up making a set of magnets out of some larger ones I had here.

Yes, you defently need free time, I have friends thatx started bussiness's becuase they thought it would give them moe free time, they ended up working longer hours than they ever did with a regular job, so I understand, I know just about everyone on the forum is sorry to hear you guys are closing.

I will defently let you know how the boots work, I think Crash got some too, don't know where he is on installing them. as far as installing them I am not really sue how they go on, each package of 4 came with some small rods (like the ons that hold the hex's on for the wheel's or go in the transmission to hold he gears) they also have some grub screw's, I have no idea what there for.

Here's the ones I got http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=270061507661&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT&ih=017

I am guessing they just hold on like you mentioned, but then I have no idea what the other hardware is for, HPI also makes them for baja, but I think they are too big for the savage's

John

hello men,

As far as those boots you posted Wister I never got those. I hope they work

well for you, I was at lhs getting fuel and asked them for axel boots and they

gave me what they thought might work.

I am not confident they are the rite thing eather. They are a little small and

they just slide onto cup joints, they are not large enough to wrap around

back of cup joint to hold it on. I am going to give them a try, I'm putting a

jumping truck together for the contest. Ill throw them on there for a test.

Good time to pay tribute to Slapmafro, Thanks Bruce.

I was just looking at the boots I bought, mine are going to be too short too. t\

What do yopu think about this, I was thinking aboiut using some silicon, like the ultra coper, or actually I have some clear silicon and using it as glue to hold the boot on and fill the hole's that it doesn't cover ( the rest of the slot's going down the side)

I am not sure about using silicon as glue, just don't know if it will hold, you guys have any other ideas of what could be used to hold them on, maybe cA? maybe the silicon will hold them??? Either way I will use the silicon to seal up the holes.

I don't think tie wraps would be a good idea
john

what do you think about filling the whole cup with silicon instead of grease??? I probably wont do it but just crossed my mind:dunno: :dunno: :dunno:

because of the constant spinning the dog bone maybe twist the silicone out.

The dog bone is constantly changing its position in the drive cup

I think they may stay on without any mod..

or we have to find the rite size to cover the whole cup joint.

Yes, I overlooked the movement of the shafts in the cup, still I think it may hold if I fill just the space between the exposed end of the dogbone and the boot.

I agree it would be best to find ones that fit, I will have to taKe a second look at the ones that "that guy" used in the pic I linked to see if they fit corectly, from memory it seems they did.
