Hey everyone,

i recently had to change the clutch shoe on my Savage x 4.6 because somehow (don't ask why) it broke... So anyways i got the same clutch shoe, part #87151, i took the old one off and put the new one on exactly like the old one. Now my problem is that with the old clutch shoe, the racing clutch bell span freely, i could give the clutch bell a good spin and it would keep going.. With the new shoe installed, i have to apply some force just to turn the clutch bell, not to much force, but it does not spin freely like it did. So now whenever i press the break on the remote, the engine stops because the clutch shoe is just always pressing against the racing clutch bell. (I checked to make sure the carburator was staying in the same position whenver i break so i know it's not an tuning issue)

Anyways, any suggestions on what i can do to fix this... is there a better manual on how to replace this part? I mean, i took the thing apart twice just to double check everything... i double checked the springs and their position, the actual position of the shoe...everything.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Sounds like the Clutch Bell is in properly shimmed.

Try loosening the Screw in the end of the crank and spinning it. If it spins freely you will need to remove a shim if it still doesn't you will need to replace the bearings in in the Clutch bell.

Are you sure its the clutch rubbing on the bell? Check the CB bearings, make sure they are ok and not burnt up. Also check the CB is shimmed correctly. When the CB screw is tightened down and the cb is not correctly shiimmed, the screw will either press too hard against the bearings, causing the CB to not spin freely, or there will be too much play in the CB.

If you are sure its the clutch rubbing on the bell, take a piece of sandpaper and clean out the inside of the bell because it may be glazed over too much.

Let me also note that after i installed the shoes, in order to get the CB over them, i had to squeeze all the shoes a little to get the CB over them...

once again i checked the springs, if i change the position of the springs, the shoes do not fit at all.

I'll try getting some pictures in a few minutes.

I checked the clutch bell... i checked the bearings

I took everything apart again..all three shoes and springs

I put them back together one by one, and when i finally put on the third shoe, the CB no long fits on the shoe, i have to squeez all the of the shoes in order be able to fit the CB over it.

I've attached a picture

the gap between the shoes seem to be to big when all three of them are in.

More pictures...

Sorry for the poor quality.. but you should be able to see the position of the springs and shoes.

It is tough to see, but I think you have the clutch springs on backwards. The long curvy part goes over the clutch shoe, and the short stubby end to the pilot nut.

It looks to me like you have the springs backwards. The long leg is supposed to sit on top of the shoe, the short leg against the nut.

Edit: AllanQ beat me to it.

These guys are correct looks like you have them incorrectly installed. You can also refer back to your stock manual for installation instructions. If you don't have this manual go to the HPI site and download it or view it there.

Any possible way there is a picture of how it's supposed to look? I have the manual, but still no luck on my part.

Opps... thanks everyone... You guys were right, i had it installed wrong. I forgot to look at one small detail.

Now the CB goes on, and spins like normal.

Thanks again everyone

Glad to help. Those small details sometimes eat you alive. Now go drive that Savage!
