I recently melted the teeth on my spur gear.

I replaced that and tried to run my truck tonight, but upon idle the clutch would engage and the truck would try to pull away, but it didn't get enough torque.
When I hit the throttle it would drive, but it was a little rough to stop.

I took my clutch bell off and there is a wear line around it, caused by the springs holding down the clutch shoes.

Is it possible that my clutch bell was getting hot enough from the burning clutch to melt the teeth on the spur gear? And is it possible that the springs have lost their ability to hold the shoes down until I hit the throttle.

Yes the springs will wearout (loose strength) as time goes. When the shoes are slipping on the CB they will cause enought heat to melt your spur. Look into a set of nova or Ofna shoes and some mugen 1.0MM springs. These will make you happy.

I personally run the OFNA shoes with there stiff (Gold) springs. I also run a Robinson Racing Vented Flywheel and a HPI Racing Vented CB just to eliminate as much heat as possable because we all know heat is an enemy to a clutch.

Thanks for the help Jay!

What about the carbon clutches from Mugen, or perhaps the aluminum from HPI?

Just looking at all options.

Also, stevrock how much run time on those parts until failure? Reason I ask is due to maintenance since I am a slacker.

It's been about a gallon of hard driving.

There was another thread about a rust inhibitor on the clutch bell that should be cleaned off, and if not it can cause the clutch to slip.
Once everything is glossed over, it's not hard for a chain reaction to occur.

Stevrock-The Mugen carbon clutches will not last any longer than the stockers as they are carbon. The HPI Clutch shoes are good but are rather expensave compaired to others if I remember correctly.

You are correct you should take some fine sand paper or emery cloth or skatch pad and get rid of it, its just a oily resadue and will worm things up a bit because of slippage. Its probably all gone in yours already but wouldnt hurt to do it anyway.

I'm going to get a bigger gear on my clutch bell, probably an 18 or 19 because I have the buku pipe.

Like somebody else said, it doesn't just wheelie, it rolls over and plays dead.
