Broken diff

Not necessarily. I lost a grub screw on the drive cup for the rear diff once, and it did the same thing. Check for this screw first. I'll look just like a setscrew when installed, but actually looks something like this --> \\\===== (threads on one end of a small shaft or rod).

If the grub screw is not missing, try turning the rear wheels by hand. Listen for grinding noises. If it makes a lot of noise, you may have a broken pinion, or teeth missing from the ring gear.

oh and you may have sheared the grub off. don't know how often that really happens but it did to me. I think it was probably just a faulty part though I only had maybe a half gal on the truck when it happened never since though.

Welcome to our site. These members will jump on a question pretty quick. Just keep asking and good luck

Always try to think of the simple things first. Cast your eyes over it carefully before you go tearing it apart.
Monkeys advice is right on the money, and you'll probably just find one of the threaded pins is missing. This is very common, and we've all been there more than once. Just use a tiny amount of loctite (thread lock) on the threads when you install a new pin, and you should be ok. Always worth checking them regularly though.

Oh, and welcome to the forum.

thanks guys I have torn the diff apart and there is metal everywhere and gears are gone in places. Ordered new diff. Anything else I should upgrade?
