Hi i have just started to break in my new k4.6.
The first thing i noticed was the engine temp was running at 248 it was holding 221 for a while then jumped up .wheels are off the ground (idle is smooth and non fluctuating)
i was running my savage (high speed passes )with the f4.6 while the k4.6 was idling and temp on the f4.6 was never more than 239
But damm i have let it idle for 25 min and still not finished a tank
i have broken in my f4.6 (no temp gauge) three months ago and cannot remember it taking so long to finish a tank
is there any thing to be worried about?
also i am going to put the savage with the k4.6 on the ground and start to drive it at no more than 1/2 throttle for the remaining 4 tanks
can any one see a problem with doing this or why the temp would be so high

thanks

the average temp for today was 63.5

The motor was lean during break in. Typically the 4.6 idles rough and spits out a lot of fuel during break in, it would not take 25 mins to idle trough a tank and engine temps would not get as hot as you saw it. Could be two reasons why the motor was lean, either the carb needles were not at the factory setting or you have an air leak. IMO, since a tank has already been run, I would richen the high speed needle before you make the 1/2 throttle passess. Good luck with the rest of your break in.

Thanks for the info
i got a new 4.6xss but used a new k4.6 i got of ebay (never been used)
i set all the needles to factory before break in might have them check them again
it was spiting out a lot of oil on the first tank

I no longer idle tanks but My K 4.6 idled for a Looooong time I do remember that. I had fans blowing on the head and it was cool out "Feb". Keep in mind that a idling mill has no air flow to cool it down. I saw over 220 B4 I added fans and the outdoor temps were in the low 40's F at best. That mill is still running strong in a friends truck I used it for 2 gals and sold it. It was very good on fuel. My LRP is a pig compared to it and my K 4.6 H.O.

I guess the F and K blocks are different. I broke my F block in the same way as Koss did, it was a little cooler outside, but went through the first tank pretty quick and the engine never got that warm.

well all is good checked carb settings were factory
and let it run around on the ground not going above 1/2 throttle
smoked always coming out of the pipe run it for 15min then check temp 215F
it ran at that temp for 3/4 of the tank after that i shut her down
will run it in again next week
the K is so different from the F engine
Thanks for all your help

i just broke in three new mills using a heat cycle method and all run great and are easy to start but each onetook an huor of straight running and a third of a gallon to do. First start the enginerun it up to 160 then give it full throttle and open the high speed needle 1 1/2 turnsto 2 turns and let the engine cool to 120 then close the hsn back to the original position, the motor should not be able to open up to full rpm or you are to lean! next tank to170 third to 180 fourth to 190, all at idle. five through 8 should be done driving in small area slowly bringing up the rpms. every tank you should lean the motor one hour to an eigth turn till your temps are around 240 degrees. this has worked very good for me so far all my engines are running really good and they were boken in pretty fast.
