So I'm installing the BP diffs today and I notice that the kit comes with 6 shims. Two that are the same size as with the old XL diffs and 4 smaller ones. The manual shows two shims on each side. Does HPI just give you a couple extra shims in the kit or are they supposed to go somewhere specific? Should I just do two on each side like the manual shows, as a start?

on any diff i say you start off by dry fittin (caz you end up taking apart several times till you get the mesh right.) with no shims.

then shim the pinion to the ring.

then ring to the pinion.

then fill with oil (or grease if thats how you do it) re-assemble & loctite.

Make sure you use a gasket, cuz if you do it dry with no gasket then put it together with the new gasket it will throw the whole thing off. At least that's the way I do it anyway.

Carb-clean works the best, use it outside though!

Just to clarify, do you mean that since the BP gears have a better mesh and deeper teeth, that they need less shimming?

I think he is saying the tolerance does not need to be so tight with bigger gears... think about i like this:

The gears are bigger, the teeth are bigger, so the gap in the gear mesh could/should be proportionally just as big.
