Hi all,

Would it be better to mod a brand new engine or break it in first?
I'd prefer to do it on a new engine so it can break in the way it will run.

Or is that a bad idea?

Any thoughts?

Depends on the method the moder uses to increase port timing. If they shim the sleeve you don't want to give them a run in mill. otherwise I don't see any harm in it. This is taking from a convo I had with a on site moder.

Bankrupter is right, it all depends on who is modding it. It's not a bad idea to run it in first, like crash told you, then you can see it's performance before and after. The other thing to think about is warranty, as soon as the dremmel touches the engine your warranty is gone (99.9% of the time) breaking it in first will let you see if there are any issues and if your modding it yourself, you will have fuel lines under the ports to guide your cuts. Good luck with what ever you choose to do.

I agree compleatly with Pure and Crash. I tend to like get them past the break in stage basicly so I can see the fuel lines Pure it talking about.

Thanks for all the answers guys.

So breaking in first seems to be the better way.
Makes sense to use the fuel markings as guides.

But would there be any negative effects or risks doing it to a new engine?
Besides the warranty issues?

The only negative affect would be that you have no idea how it ran before and mostly you have no clue where to cut especially being a new modder. Experienced modders may not need the fuel lines but most of us do much better work being able to see them. Just my .02
