Well I finally got all my fuel, etc for my Savage X, and decided to break it in today. It was 38 degrees out so I wrapped the head with aluminum foil and proceeded with the break in. I went with Stephen Bess's Heat Cycling method mainly because everyone seems to really like his method the best for their mills. At first it was boggy, but didnt stall out at all. I kept blipping the throttle running around in a figure 8 for 2 to 3 minutes, then shut down to cool returning to BDC. After 15 minutes of that I did 3 to 4 minute intervals repeating the cool down process for a total of 25 minutes. After that i headed off to do my tuning. I warmed the truck up and kept a temperature of 205 to 210 degrees with the aluminum foil. I leaned out the HSN to where it would scream at WOT but still it would stall then i turned it back 1/8th. It still had blue smoke , and ran like a banshee :FarleyParty: It would bog a little at take off so I turned the LSN 1/8th turn, and after that it would almost literally flip backwards.

This was my first Nitro r/c, and I feel that my break in went super smooth. I am totally in love with my truck , and its extremely fun. I ran 3 tanks of fuel after i got all the setting zeroed in. And I cant keep the front wheels on the ground. Only thing that was broke was the stock antenna tube because i kept flipping over backwards lmao. I LOVE THIS TRUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry for the long post, but just wanted to let everyone know about my first Nitro Break in...

Savage is awesome! :jamout:

great to here eveything went good.got to love the savy!whats mill do u have

Stock F4.6 for now. And its awesome, I know there is more beastier mills out there, but for now till i get use to Nitros, the F4.6 is great for me. :smiliejam:

Wait till you hit a gallon! Glad to hear everyting went good for you. Let us know how it continues to go. I found putting some shrink tube on the antenna will help it last longer. I use some stuff I can't find online that is silicon and used for wires exposed to water. I may buy it locally and post it up on here but the stuff ain't cheap! Build a ramp when you get the chance and you'll love her even more! Let me know if you ever upgrade your engine and want to sell the F4.6. I killed mine and need a block.

Will do Parker, hopefully i can get a few good gallons out of the stock mill. If not the Ill have a LRP ordered pronto if problems happen hehe.

glad to hear break in went well for ya!! and yes those little nitro engines really surprised me to when i first got mine, i wasnt expecting to see that much power out of something so small lol

Never thought to use alum. foil around the head, good idea! But I will go one further.. there is a type of tape that is a bit more rugged than alum. foil that is sticky on one side that I bet would work especially good. I have to run my trucks in the cold these days and with the mention of the alum. foil it made me think to use that tape that I have.. glad you are enjoying your new truck.. be thankful you have the newer of the savage models.. there have been a lot of updates to these trucks over the past few years.. metal diffs.. good dependable spur gears, better radio box setup.. you'll run that thing a lot more than you'll wrench on it, and this is a good thing!

Little more colder today than yesterday. Same deal, same fuel etc. Warmed the head up with my blow dryer to around 180* (still wrapped with aluminum foil). After I ran around in circles for a few I got the temp up to 220, and it sounded like it was warmed up so i hit straight for my yard (1.5 acres worth) and started nailing the throttle. I kept noticing a blurbing sound coming from the truck on WOT. So I leaned it back 1/8th, and ran it did a temp check 280* I was like wow, so I richened it 1/16th and did another WOT run with a couple half throttle passes, rechecked 250*, So I removed some Aluminum foil to let some air in, took off the temp stayed around 230. So with 1 gallon in ,my truck is doing great I think, considering its winter and bitter cold and my first Nitro. Based on everything I have read everywhere on this forum. I think my truck is doing fine. Thanks everyone!

May not want to use the tape bud. We call that speed tape on aircraft. If you seal a panel and it doesn't have the time to dry, that tape will hold on in flight. I wouldn't use it because it becomes a sticky mess when it gets hot.
