Help me out guys,

Sorry for the stupidity but, being I'm I'm old school I'm new to the world of NiMH batteries. I picked up a pirahna ac/dc digital peak charger, a venom 3000mah nihm battery for the ez-start and an orion marathon 1600mah battery.

I charged the venom battery at 3a it took about an hour, peak detection threshold? 6mv I think it was? It charged the full 3000 mah rating and was warm to the touch, felt about right.

The marathon on the other hand, I charged it at 1a, 1600mah rating but it only took 1200mah before saying it was fully complete. I left the threshold at 6mv where it is listed stock on the charger.

What am I doing wrong? Or is this normal for new packs to false peak? Also being old school and not knowing, what is the way to store these batteries? For example...

If I charge them the night before I'm going to bash, do I need to repeak them?

If I'm not going to be running for a while, how do I store nihm packs? As in how much of a charge do I leave in them? I hear they naturally discharge, so how can I leave a charge in them if they naturally discharge?

Thats all I can think of for now :) Thanks in advance for the help.

Hmm I'm no wiz at batteries but when my hump pack was false peaking I charged it at a lower setting and it worked fine. Are you on the lowest setting? If not try that and tell us if that helps.

I got two 1200mah venom pack and one of them did false peak the first 5 or 6 times I charged it but it finally quit doing it. I think the rule of thumb is divide the size of the pack by 1000 and that is what you should charge at...don't quote me on that. When in question just slow charge it.

Hi,

Here is some pretty good info on nicad's NiMH's and more. Charging, discharging and max draw rates.

There is some more info if you hit the "PDF Files" link at the top of the page. These are all in the PDF format so you will need adobe reader.

Edit-- I just saw this in the NiMH PDF it may be why your battery is false peaking It also goes with what Blazer said about his doing that the first few times he charged his. "Charging NiMH battery packs for the first time may require charging at 1/10 C (capacity) to wake them up and
reach full capacity."
