Some big news in the RC hobby today... AMain and Hobbytown partner up allowing AMain to handle the online sales for Hobbytown while Hobbytown licenses the AMain name to retail stores. A partnership like this can surely only help the hobby, looking forward to what's to come.

Press release:
Hobbytown Unlimited, Inc., the franchisor of the largest chain of independently owned and operated retail hobby stores in the US is partnering with AMain Performance Hobbies to manage and execute hobbytown.com online merchandising, sales and ecommerce fulfillment. AMain Performance Hobbies, an industry leader in online hobby retailing will utilize the amainhobbies.com platform to host and manage the hobbytown.com website.

In addition to online collaboration, HobbyTown will license the AMain brand to franchise brick & mortar retail stores and racing facilities. AMain franchise stores and racing facilities will operate with the full support of the HobbyTown system including the exclusive SMART POS and inventory management system, performance reporting, operational and marketing services, and access to exclusive BuyersClub product distribution including proprietary products developed by Firelands Group. Radio control products will be the focal point of the AMain retail store merchandising mix, promotions and racing activities.

The successful HobbyTown cobranding or conversion model introduced in 2012 that blends well-established independent retailer brands with the added value, services and support provided by the HobbyTown franchise will be extended strategically to qualified independents under the licensed AMain brand.

HobbyTown President Bob Wilke credits the alignment of core values, mission and vision shared between the organizations as the key motivation to pursue the joint effort to grow and expand brick & mortar hobby retailing. “The alignment between HobbyTown and AMain extends beyond shared values and the opportunity to gain synergy from the focus on core competencies. We are on the same page with the belief that the future growth of the hobby industry is dependent upon increasing the profitability and viability of the brick and mortar retailers. If the hobby industry focuses on increasing retailer profitability, the result will be an expanded physical footprint of stores to showcase and promote the hobby industry. When that happens, the profits will follow all the way through the industry supply chain.”

AMain Co-Founder and CEO Kendall Bennett believes that the brick and mortar hobby stores are vital to our industry. “As an avid hobbyist and owner of two brick and mortar retail stores, we have learned a great deal about the hobby consumer over the last 10 years. Brick and mortar stores provide a critical entry point for new hobby enthusiasts, while online retailers cater to hobbyists in need of a wider selection of unique and hard to find products. Over the past several years, it has become increasingly clear that the relationship between online retail and brick and mortar must become better aligned to serve the hobby customer and to increase the overall health of the hobby industry. A partnership between HobbyTown and AMain provides an amazing opportunity to accomplish these goals.”

HobbyTown is promoting the 2016 HobbyTown National Convention theme “Retailers First” as a rallying point for increasing the viability of hobby retailers for the greater good of the industry. #retailersfirst

Never been impressed by hobbytown's stores either. Hopefully amain doesn't get a bad deal out of this.

Best I got is HobbyTown. One local track has a small shop, but it's not very big and sensibily they only carry stuff for rigs they run. The other track has a hobby shop, but I've not been there yet.

You shut your face, guy with TWO LOCAL TRACKS AND SHOPS! lol

All I have now are hobbytowns. 3 of them, but not one closer than an hours drive to where I am and they never stock the fuel I need.

Well in my defense Mr Olds... the one track is 45 min away and has STRICT no nitro law. Lol I do need to check the otherone out tho. :blackeye:

After having been to several HobbyTown stores, I have never been impressed by their knowlegable staff, I much prefer the old mom and pop stores over any of the retail giants, to me something is lost in the big box store feel of the places......
The hobby shop I go to always has either the owner or at least one or two knowlegable persons behind the counter to help with questions and ordering parts etc.....

The most recent one that closed near me was one of those. Open for 20+ years as an RC/train/model/track racing store. Only place that always had the byrons fuel I ran.

i have a hobbytown about hour away i don't get to that one much, its nice has alot of parts variaty, but a long drive for just a couple of parts. i do have a local shop here in town but odd hours tuesday through friday 5pm to 8pm and saturday 10 to 5 i think, closed sunday and monday. i think he has a main job and has the shop as a part time thing it is nice to have a local shop though so not complaining about the hours by any means....lol. he mostly carries traxxas parts though and a few savage parts. so i mainly get my stuff from amain. but for other quick stuff thats needed its great having a local shop.

I'm still really really new to all of this, so I don't have a lot of input other than I order my Byron's from Amazon and with the prime I get it to my house in 2 days. I don't pay shipping with prime, and I especially don't pay any hazmat shipping fees @olds97_lss

I almost pulled the pin on a 4 gallon case from a-main, but with hazmat and shipping, I would have spent nearly $40 per gallon which is almost twice what it would cost to pick up locally.

Still though, the odonnels I can get doesn't run nearly as good, so if I find the time to burn through 2 gallons before I'm half way through summer, I might just buy it online anyway.

Since I just bought a new LRP30 for my savage x... one of those gallons will be mostly break-in of that.

EDIT:
just looked at amazon and I only see it offered in quarts for $12 a piece. That's $48 a gallon...

From the sounds of your post that's expensive. as I stated before I'm pretty new. I've only bought 1 quart as I can't get my savage 25 running yet @olds97_lss. Did I interpret that correctly?

Yea, that's really expensive. I get the Byrons at HobbyTown for $28 a gallon.

Yeah, I was getting it for around that before my LHS closed up shop. The 20% was a bit cheaper, the 30% was a bit more, but I always bought one of each to mix and the price came out around $26 a gallon.

@Rooky Is that the one in Castleton and Southport? I thought I went on their website (or lack thereof) and couldn't find Byron's. That's why I grabbed a quart from Amazon.

Yea, I go to the one in Castleton. Their website is junk, IMHO. They used to be okay, you could even order online and pickup in store. But the last couple years... yea, no. Lol

Yeah, I've only recently tried their site, and I was less than impressed to be nice about it. And I'm not sure if I ever told you the story about my bad customer experience in Southport. They've been nicer since then though.

Yea, I think you did. I really want to check out Monster Hobbies at JCP Raceway, I just haven't been able to. They're only open when the track is open.

Yeah, I still need to get by there myself. That's a decent drive for you though.
