Air filters

Just curious i have always been told not to run k and n air filters on rc cars and that k and n do not make specific filters for rc. But i just found this link.

Looks interesting. I'm not sure how that would harm an RC. The reason some people don't like K&N filters is the oil. If you don't maintain them correctly, and the intake of your car, you can have issues. This is because the oil can coat your MAF and IAT causing them to read incorrectly. Since RC engines don't have electronic sensors, then the only possibility of an issue would be if there is an incompatibility between the oil from the filter and the oil/fuel going into your engine.

On a side note, if you are looking for a worthwhile filter take a look at Motosaver. I've used their filter on my savage for years without issue. It also uses an oiled filter.

Yup, I have a few of those style filters around, I used them years ago when I was runnin my USA1 Nitro Crusher, I lightly oiled the filter and used a foam pre filter on the outside of it to help keep the crud off the k/n filter.....you can get K&N airfilter oil in a spray can too now it is much easier to apply that way..... I usually spray some in a baggie and mush into the foam filter really good. remember to use just enough to coat the filter, don't overdo the oil....a little goes a long ways....

If you're looking for personal opinions I'd steer completely clear from a K&N filter. Even this K&N filter for the very fact they are NOT designed for RC. They just simply fit RC.

Even the site says it happens to fit, not designed for RC and there is in fact a big difference. In the many years I've been in the hobby I've seen several people use these filters typically the only ones that recommend them are doing so because they "look cool" not because performance or better filtration. In fact most people that do run these have harder times with tuning and more crud or debris enter their carb and engine... again not designed for RC. The K&N filter is a paper based filter that doesn't provide the same degree of filtration as a foam filter does.

If you're going on looks and don't care about the carb or engine, then obviously you're going to go with a K&N. If filtration, longer engine/carb life, and easier tuning is your primary goal then getting a Motor Saver air filter is what you will want or a HPI High Performance air filter (basically a re-badged motor saver).

I have to agree with WoodiE on this , besides using one designed for the engine is a better bet by far and they aint too bad for the whole unit I have seen them for 20 bux or so......

I will surely be watching for that.

I will not speak against or for using that little K&N unit on RC because well...I simply don't know one way or the other. But, I do use a K&N filter on my 1:1 1966 Cadillac and treat it with the spray which I have found works quite nice on my RC foams. I run my nitros almost daily and thoroughly clean the foams in a mild solution of Simple Green followed by a good rinse and retreat with the K&N spray as part of my aftercare. When I first got my nitros I was only re-oiling the foams. I seem to be keeping more crap in the foams and out of the carbs using the K&N spray.

+1 on the motor saver filters, I think the stock hpi 2 stage filter is just as good. But the KnN filter on an rc engine looks cool!!

Looks cool does not make for functional alot of the time. Integy's aluminum parts say hi (as well as these K&N filters)!

There are exceptions to that ofcourse, like LST shocks.

K&N filters are very popular on 1:1 cars and work just fine.
They are NOT a good choice for RC since the paper material does not block the extremely fine dust that can damage our tiny engines.
A 2 stage Motor Saver with the inner filter oiled has always been the #1 choice for a nitro engine.

I used K&N mini filters back in the 90's on my USA1 Nitro Crusher, we oiled the cloth inner filter on them, (they actually look alot like a gauze cloth a few layers wrapped around) and I made up a few foam prefilters for the outer filter, they worked reasonably well as long as kept clean... I ran the heck outta that truck, in fact I believe I have a few K&N filters still in the package around here somewhere. Maybe I will have to find them and show a few pics of them, they do look cool atop the carb, but I am sure modern filters are the way to go with todays engines

Get motor saver. They are great. And they look way better than stock.
