Wow some of those novarossi mills are something else, annother one I had never heard of.

Does anybody know what the HP is on those BL motors they use in the savage bl conversions? I could see an eletric could have a higher top speed just because of the high rpm's but as for as power, well I am curious.

basically, to put it into words, a guy made a brushless e-savage, and it had so much torque it would invert itself (do a complete backflip) from a dead stop, without traveling much at all...in fact, when he tried it in his garage, he did (I think) 3 complete backflips in the space of about 5 feet (from a dead stop) just pegging the throttle, and holding it there...it was VERY impressive...if anyone else can find an active link to that vid, it'd ve kewl, 'cuz words can't describe the fury of that thing flipping again and again...in the first run, he even spun one of his wheels off the truck in mid-flip...
 
It's hard to put a HP or kW rating on an electric as it depends on the batteries the motor is connected too. If it's power from a nitro I would also agree that the nova rossi engines are probably the best. I know one of they guys here was running some stupidly powerful engine that no matter how low geared it was 1st gear was useless. It was a werks though I thought.
 
It is easy to put HP ratings on eletric as long as it is at the max rated voltage and current (power) On my sprinkler system I have a huge AC motor that is rated at 1 hp, I have seen hp ratings on other.

the most watts on the page is 1698W so 1698 x 0.00134102209 HP = 2.27HP
That's really fishy to me just from looking at the size of otheer 1hp BL motors like the one in the post above, but if they say its 1698watts, and if 1 watt = 0.00134102209 (thats what google's calculator said when I searched for "watts to HP" then that must be correct.


so the most powerfull motor on that site is, 2.27hp, but that you will only get for the first second the power will drop every second you run, here's the formulas

the formula for watts is P/IxE P=power in watts, I= current, and E= electromotive force in Voltage.

The battery is a 6S (a 6 cell pack) which is 22.2volts so 1698watts / 22.2volts = about 76.5amps from a 6000mah (6 amp hours means if you draw 6 amps it will last 1 hour) drawing 76amps you have 12 minutes of power, the voltage will drop during that 12 minutes which means less hp every second you run. if the drain on the battery is liner then your at half the HP in 6 minutes (and that's with a perfect battery)

Thats the most hp that page sells, I am sure you can find bigger bl motors and you can keep stacking batteries on to get more power for bigger motors but you soon loose the weight to HP ratio. Same for nitro.

They both have advantages and disadvantages.

ok lets talk stock out of the box brushless give the new rustler vxl a look.... i have seen it in action...... with a 3s LiPo.......will pull the wheels at 40+ mph with a blip of the throttle.......will outrun anything in my toy box
 
that is one thing about eletric, you go from 0 to full power as fast as you pull the trigger it on the wheels. another thing I like about them is less noise.

there has got to be something missing, it is just hard for me to believe those small motors get that kind of HP, I say this, well I look at the motor on the sprinkler system and it is about 8" in dia, and and about 10" to a foot long it is labled as 1HP, I cannot imagine 1 of those little bl rc motors pumping water around the yard like it does. same with a washing machine motor, I just am confused by that.

check this BL motor out, it would be 8.71HP according to the formula it is a monster, I saw this a while back and saved the page in favorites, not a bad price either,

Wister that's crazy. 130rpm/v that's real slow but the torque would be insane. The reason brushless motors are so much more powerful is due to them being so much more efficiency. They generate far less heat which means they can work harder and produce more power as less energy is wasted in heat. The only problem is the controller for them has to be a lot more complicated/expensive.

Yes I understand about BL motors, but those big motors, for that matter all AC motors are brushless, the hard part is making them run on dc which is what the controller does, it is not really ac butis almost the same. AC motors wont work with brushes at all, some of those big motors are 3 phase, the one I linked are 1 phase and the rc type are, well most are BLDC which is what I was talking about above it is really very hard and not efficient to convert DC into AC so they use the next best which is the BLDC the signal is so close they are ogten mistaken for ac.

I agree 100% BL motors are way more efficient than brushed motors for a couple reasons, the main one being the brushes causing friction.

My problem comes in on HP, which like watt's is just a unit of measurement for work, 1HP should be 1 hp no matter what you are talking about. so when they say one of the small bl motrors is 2 or 3 hp and a huge 220v motor is 1 hp that is where I get confused. for me it is kind of the same as saying a nitro motor is 3hp and that is the same as a briggs and straton 3hp like you see on lawn mowers or go carts, I just have a hard time seeing a nitro power either one.

I don't think either Nitro or BL can claim to be the fastest or more powerfull in our hobby though, you can always get bigger and faster, more technically advaNced on both.

I'm a big HPI fan, but kudos to Traxxas for embracing brushless technology across so many vehicles! Losi did it first, but Traxxas has done it biggest.

Just remember, it takes a very expensive 3s LiPo pack (and charger) to get the monster speeds. A typical 6-cell NiMH stick pack will get it into the 30-40mph range. Nothing wrong with that, but Traxxas' 70+mph claims should have a little asterisk by them.
 
That was kind of just luck. Someone happened to repost it on another forum I frequent not long after you posted about it.

IMHO there's nothing like nitro. I mean for me it's not all just about the speed. It's about the smell of burnt nitro, hearing your gears change and so much more. Don't get me wrong, I'm really impressed by brushless motors, they ARE amazing. In fact all my helis are brushless. It is very expensive and you've got to be really careful with those batteries. My trex 600 with a fully charged 4500Mah battery would give me around 8-10 minutes of flight time then it's time for another battery...and those batteries goes for around $170 a pop.

I'm no expert on engines either gas/nitro or electric, but it would be interesting to compare the torque and hp curves on both platforms. In terms of power and most if not all things being equal, it would vote for the nitro engines being more powerful and most probably the brushless motors for having the torque advantage.

The factors I would consider when deciding about nitro or electric would revolve around maintenance, speed, affordability, run time and the general fun factor. I much prefer nitro for my surface vehicles, but I am gonna get that traxxas 70mph monster though...
 
So it's pretty obvious that the Novarossi engines are the top of the line. I'm not sure which one to get though. Is it the modified N528XRR?

Is this going to be a simple engine swap with my stock Xss engine? Are there any mods you guys think that should be done in order to run this engine.

Here's what I've got. Got a savage xss 4.6 with the extended FLM LCG chassis, integy MRS5 suspension, 3 speed transmission, integy aluminum suspension arms and shock towers, FLM steering brace and a couple more mods that don't come to mind right now. Dogbones, driveshafts, CVT's are stock, so are the wheel hubs. Stock clutch in but I've got the HPI 87153 to install later.

So again, which Novarossi engine should I get for my truck and would it be a simple swap out...thanks again guys.
 
Just make sure it's got a pullstart or roto-start backplate and an SG crank and you should be set. You may have to rotate the carb 180 degrees, but that's possible with any engine (buggies and truggies use a different orientation). 99% of big-blocks follow industry standards regarding the crank, block size, mount bolt spacing, etc.
