Thought I’d see if I could get my Savage going today then I discovered why I got fed up with it in the first place - the spur gear melted
6289

Then I noticed the clutch bell was really loose so pulled the engine out and discovered this was knackered too

Ive sussed out that I’m going to need these parts (circled in pen)

My question is, is there better stuff out there to replace it with ? I’m in the UK

Hardened steel spur and clutch bell, much better than the plastic gear and durable to boot, you need the set because the stock bell will not handle the steel spur.....

Alloy clutch shoes and new springs for sure, also consider the bearings and related parts...

Clutch bell bearings, buy good ones to start you will be much happier with decent parts.....

Keep in mind the alloy clutch will require routine maintenance to keep in good shape, but is well worth it for how well they hold compared to carbon shoes......

on another note also consider removing that heavy brass bushing on the end of the crankshaft and just use a short piece of fuel tube instead of that bushing, here is what I did to mine and the bell bearings last longer also......

Looking at that engine, there's a lot of oil on the crank case. Kind of wondering if your front bearing is leaking a lot, which causes oil to fling all over. If that gets on your clutch, it will cause it to slip excessively and fail prematurely as well.

I run a steel spur on my savage, but not due to stripping teeth, but rather due to melting the center out of it over and over. Without locking the slipper down, it would slip when I ran gearing taller than 49/16, even though the engine could pull taller gearing. At the time, I was running a bit smaller tire and 47/17 worked well. With the tire I'm running now, I have it at 47/16, but haven't run it yet as I changed it over the winter. Won't know how it does until spring.

Cheers mate. I’ve had nothing but problems with the Savage since I got it. Been through loads of plastic spurs. Think I had it running good for about 20mins Overall. Hopefully we’ll get it sorted this year

You know, looking at your spur... I'm not sure you have it setup right. That brass bushing is sticking out way too far. It almost looks like you have the wrong spur or bushing on there. It looks like you have the spur gear for the "dual pad slipper" vs the spur gear for the "single pad slipper" on a setup that should have the single pad spur that has the slipper pad on the back only.

Here's a few photo's of mine, I couldn't find any better ones when I was running a plastic spur. Both have the single slipper pad setup/spur on them.

This is an image I found of one with the dual pad slipper, the front of the spur is designed different and where the bushing goes is thinner from the front to the back of the spur:

That may be why your having spur issues.

That was a setup that HPI had for a while that didn't work well, so they ended up changing back to the single pad setup.

Took me a bit to find the dual pad spur:

vs the single pad spur:

The side of the spur that goes towards the engine looks completely different than what you have. But I think it's what you need. Not sure how many teeth you currently have though. You can find 47,49,52:

I must have ordered the wrong spur gear as I found an original which just uses one slipper pad as opposed to the dual setup.
Have gone with standard clutch parts just now but will source the better ones soon. I just want to get the thing going first.
