Like the title says I have managed to destroy 3 stock spurs in 2 days. I put 3 gallons on my original spur gear with my f4.6, and then I dedided to put in an Lrp z.28 spec III with a hpi polished pipe, nova clutch shoes and mugen .9 springs. Well the first 6 breakin tanks went great, then I started tuning for performance and am only getting through about 1 tank before I strip all the teeth 3/4's of the way off the spur gears.

Ive searched through old threads and I cant seem to figure out what I'm doing wrong. My mesh is set correctly, screws are locktighted, clutchbell is shimmed properly, truck idles without the clutches engaging and my motor mount is in good shape!

I'm out of ideas. Should I order a hardened steel robinson set? Or tighten my mesh up a little more? Or something else?

On a good note this motor kicks a@@:jamout:
Thanks guys.

If your only stripping 3/4 I would tighten up the mesh a little.

The last one I stripped I actually tightened it up the mesh a bit more and after about 1.5 tanks of just ripping around in a grass field I ended up stripping it almost all the way down.

Unfortunately I ran out of spares. I'm going to go to my lhs tommorow to pick one up, they have a 49t in stock. I already bought all of the 47t's they had.:dmt:

Did you check the slipper? Is it tightened correctly? Do you notice the spurs are stripping when you are jumping or just straight runs? Are all the screws in the transmission case tight? I have the same setup you do with the engine and pipe and so far no problems other then trying to keep it on all 4..

My slipper is fine, it is 1/4 turn out from tight. They are stripping on straight runs, unfortunately my truck hasn't seen the ramp since I swapped motors. I have not checked the tranny screws, I will do so tonight though, thats a very good idea!

The only other explanation I could come up with is maybe the Nova shoes (with no weights) are grabbing to hard? But it seems plenty of other forum members are running them the same way.

Are you running the nova shoes? If so how do you have them weighted?

I really want to get this ironed out because this motor is so much fun, when it is in the truck:cussing:

Thanks

Take the engine out and see if one of the screws that holds the engine plate to the engine braces has backed out.

The nova shoes aren't the problem .. I run NO weights, Your clutch isn't the problem (in this case) if the clutch is on right..

Just double check all screws (motor mount screws, motor plate, all tvp screws .. and make damn sure your gear mesh is right .. You should have VERY little play between the cb and sg when the mesh is right ...

Best of luck .. KEEEP US POSED BUD !!!

I'm running dynamite max life shoes right now. I just swapped the mugen 1.1 springs out for 1.0 springs. If the mesh is right and the slipper is ok then something is flexing under acceleration. Id check all the screws on the truck to make sure they are all tight, and all there.

Thanks again for all the help guys. I'm going to go over the truck and make sure it's all nice and tight tonight. Then when I get my new spur tommorow I'll give it another go and give you guys an update.

hey paintfumes...i had the same problem with my savage 25. after closely looking at the motor...i see that the plate that the engine mount bolts to is warp. fix it and haven't had the problem since. i bought the thicker one from the savage x rtr

well i was eating them up and and after about ten of then i was hot.i had checked everything and oneday i started taking everything apart.that when i found my motor plate had a hair line crack that i had missed. so check yours real close.
for setting the mesh of the gears,i fold a piece of paper 3 times and mash the gears together as hard as i can and its perfect.

Update!

Well I went bashing this morning and ran 7 tanks of gas on one spur gear:jamout: And it's still good.

What happened was 2 of the screws that hold the motor to the motor mount, had backed out a tiny bit. I think it was because I used blue locktite on them, so I took all 4 out put on some red locktite.

Thanks for all your help guys.

It was nice to be able to go out and beat on my truck for more than 10 minutes!

new problem

Well I got a new problem now.

Everything was going great and then my truck wouldn't go into second gear, then it wouldn't do wheelies and finally it wouldn't move! I destroyed the pad on the spur gear. I had the spur 1/4 turn out from fully tight.

Is there any way to avoid this? Should I go tighter or looser on the slipper?

Thanks guys. I was having a blast for a few tanks atleast!

Heres what happened:

sounds like you should got tighten. when i bought my new savy rtr...the truck was running fine... then it seemed like it was reving way to high to even take off. i tightened the spur as tight as i could with a wrench and haven't had the problem since. sounds like your pad on the spur had been slipping before for it to wear a pad out.

Thanks for the advice. So you are saying I should tighten it all the way?

Unfortuately the spur gear and pad only had about 8-9 tanks of fuel on it. I put it on Saturday! I noticed after about 6.5 I had a decrease in power and thought maybe it was in my tune, so I played with the needles a bit, and that had no effect. By the time I realized what it was it was already to the point that the truck wouldn't move 🙁

i did.....i hate it when it slips! my budding and i bought RTRs at the same time....his did the same because he caught it too late. another friend of mine bought rtr....and we tighten his up as soon as we took it out the box!! check your gear to make sure it hasn't warped from the heat. just place it on a counter top and see if it lies flat.

I don't think the gear is usable anymore if you look at the pic you can see that the inside of the gear is worn down, so the spot that the pad is supposed to go is gone. There is supposed to be a raised section in the center that looks sort of like a maltese cross, the pad is shaped like one also.

Time to place a tower hobby order.

I would tighten the slipper all the way down and then back it off about 1/8th of a turn and see how that goes.
