Do I have to remove the 3rd gear to adjust the shift point for the 2nd gear? If I do HPI needs to rethink their 3 speed.
 
To adjust 1 to 2nd on the 3 speed, YES u need to tear the tranny apart from 2nd to 3rd can be done outside of the case,


HPI needs to work on allot of things man trust me
 
Heh, SJ. Just so happens that my 3 speed has me wanting an earlier shift into thrid gear. I found the adjustment screw through the little rubber cap on the side of the trans. The adjustment screw is too tight to break loose for an adjustment. Is there lock-tite on this little bas#$%d? I believe I'm supposed to be able to back-off the adjustment screw about a 16th or so to get an earlier shift point. Do you know if this is correct? thanks for a reply.

Yes clockwise for a later shift and counterclockwise for an earlier shift. It can be tight just make sure your turning the right one.
 
well it sounds like to your trying to turn the wrong set screw.. there is 2 of them right together there (one on top of the other) u want to turn the bottom one) it looks like it goes in at an angle.. there should be no locktite on that at all and should turn easy... turn it like 1/8 turn counter clockwise to make it shift a little earlier .... hope this helps ya bud
 
Thanks you guys. I was going for the top set screw based on a buds instruction to do so. So the one on an angle is the correct one, huh. Any advice on getting an allen wrench to fit in the angled access area or is it easier than it looks? I have'nt tried it yet because I thought the top set screw was the only one that could be accessed with any ease
 
With the XSS tranny the top comes off w/o pulling the tranny so you can adjust the 1st and 2nd gear. However you will need to buy the XSS tranny which is a 2 speed and then buy the 3 speed gear setup. Seems like a hassel but in the long run worth it. Doing the install was pretty much straight forward not complicated.

I was able to figure this out with the help of JT.
 
Forgot a few things. IMO - I think this is the best tranny setup their is. Easy to get to easy to adjust a well built tranny case and the 3 speed gears that replace the gears in the XSS appear to be more solid. I haven't ran mine just yet but like the biuld of it. Last I did change out all stock bearings and went with Acer ceramic pro bearings. Bearings do make a difference, smoothness and long gevity. Acer even though they cost more cost less than Boca's by twice as much. Bearings are something most folks don't really consider.

incorrect. The 3speed has to be taken apart to adjust the 1-2 shift point.

That hole you refer to has no real use at this time.
 
yea I don't know y that hole is even there, The case just makes it easier to get to the grears thats all
and its a stronger more ridged case !!
 
I got the SMF bearing kit and I really like it. Acer bearings may happen later down the road.
 
i can't even tell anymore if mine is even hitting 3rd. maybe it's hitting the first 2 to fast. when it winds out in what i think is the 3rd gear it's hauling buttocks.

If it's really haulin, I'd say you're probably just about skipping 1st gear altogether...like adjustment must be set WAY low, that's all.
 
question to all you rc jucnkies I just purchaces my for hpi I bought the xss 4.6 kit and was wondering if the three speed transmisssion is worth the money and hassle of installing it also does the trans have to be removed to adjust it thanks and any help would be appreciated
 
I can say that the three speed is definately worth it, arctichp. Not to sure about the adjustable points on the xss. I got an SS. By the way, arctichpi, WELCOME TO THE SITE. I know your Question has pletty of supporting opinions out here. Its just a matter of getting to chat with a few more guys. Keep looking and posting your Q's. Good luck.
 
I say its worth it, i love my 3 speed but if you want to be able to adjust the shift points without ripping it apart i would get the assembled one

Your still guna have to rip it apart, because as darkshine and SJ quite rightly say, the 2nd gear adjustment is covered by another gear. The top access gear box just makes it easier to get the gears out of the box. Once they're out you have got to strip the shaft, or at least partialy, to access the adjustment screw in the clutch.

All you need is a drill, and you can adjust the 2nd gear. Don't be so difficult... 😛
 
Slright I have been ripping my tranny apart to adjust the 1-2 gear shifts. How are you using a drill to adjust and if it is cutting a hole in the 3rd gear gear we need a detailed instruction post. Please include pics.
 
This was intended as a joke, as I was and have been wrong since 2007...

But, with a drill, you could adjust the 2'nd gear without disseminating the gearbox, you would however, ruin your gearbox in the process.
 
My bad man! I was not looking at the spot on the top of the thread, and I was hoping there was a way. LOL do I feel like an idiot!!!
