Updates on my Octane.

I took mine once again back to the shop as it stopped changing gears suddenly and sticked to the 1st (still on 5 tanks..). They are supposed to be official distributors and they told me that there are no other types of wheels and tires except the ones that come with the car.. sad...

To be fair, technically, the stock wheels and tires are the only official wheels for the octane. HPI doesn't even list any optional wheels and tires.

That being said, what Jam said is true. Clearly the hobby shop was just being lazy.

Hobbico tec rep told me it takes 8-10 tanks of fuel to get the engine to come alive. The book says 3 then tune. They keep changing there story with the Octane on how to run, tune and break it in. With no remote I cant drive mine so I been breaking it in my own way. Sitting on an upside down 5 gallon buck I have been letting it idle through tanks of fuel. I adjusted the low speed needle a hair richer and got a couple extra spark plugs from local parts store. Had to change one out plug so far and charged my 1600 mah hump backs. My plan is heat cycles, I let it run through a tank then cool 30 min and repeat. I plan to burn an entire gallon of fuel like this. When or if my new remote gets here I will readjust the low speed needle and go from there.

My transmitter came in today while I was at work. I binded it with fail safe when I got home. Looking forward to running it this weekend. I am running 87 octane with Stihl chain saw oil since I got the truck back from the engine rebuild. 25:1 is the ratio so that makes mix life easy. Stihl 2 gal mix is sold in 6 packs, they run 50:1. So I just dump one bottle in with one gallon. Hey, the engine does not rev high so an engine is an engine. My Husqvarna saw runs 3 times faster. I have already run a gallon of fuel through it at idle. It blew up running HPI oil after 2 1/2 tanks, the Stihl oil is doing good. I even pulled the plug after 6 to 8 tanks and the top of the piston was still shiny. I don't believe there is any need for synthetic oil or high octane fuel with this truck. When I called Hobbico they said they run 87 octane in the trucks they repair.

Well an early morning start at 8am, (18 degrees) snow on the ground sure helps to clean your model up. i am sure my neighbors enjoyed the noise.Had to adjust the high speed needle to keep it running at such cold temps. I will re-tune when it warms up. Till then I will just piss off the neighbors. LOL

wow what an ordeal you went through, i really hope you have a great time bashing, after what you went through, to hell with the neighbours, its savage time :)

Thank you but the Octane is down again. Steering servo went out and one of the three brake disks broke off.

There sending me new brakes ans a steering servo.

Octane up and running!!! It blew up on HPI oil so I have run nothing but 87 octane fuel and Stihl 2 cycle oil since the rebuild. All the new Stihl power equipment runs 50:1 so I simply buy the bottles of oil to mix 2 gallon but only mix it in 1 gallon can, this gives me 25:1. We will see how it does over the long term.

You could say I been lucky or unlucky to now have been the owner of two out of the box new Savage XL Octanes. It has been a huge learning experience. Had trouble with both, more with the first and that's why they sent me a new one. It had problems also, so I ask the question. Am I just unlucky or are Octanes problematic? For a more optimistic view watch HemiStorms video's on YouTube. So far the newest Octane"s motor failed, steering servo and a brake disk. As for the first just read the forum. I have learned a lot about how to tune and trouble shoot one through the whole mess of things. So I think with my experiences I may be able to help another Octane owner. So feel free to ask me any question about yours and I will help the best I know how. Onto the new Octane, My static break in seems to work. The new Octane runs much faster and shift better than the last.It Shifts better because it's making the power and RPM it should.

hi,yes iam 8 tanks in using the same oil mix as you,i have not had any problems apart from the truck wont change gear at all,i think the engine just isn't producing enough power ie rpm, whats your thoughts, sounds like its holding in 1st? I took it easy on the truck for until now 8th tank in.

Hi

Great patience you show here, Jeepjunk :)

I got a second hand Octane earlier this week, one of those stupid impuls things, didn't know what I bought, just thought HPI was a well known enough brand. But when I checked it up ... well, you get it ;)
Clearly the bloke who had it before me had problems getting it to run, becaue the needles where way off. Back to stock settings and a new NGK it is running fairly. I am 3 tanks in today and I heard the second gear going in a few times. But it is still quite a bit left to full speed and torque. I have no idea how many tanks was run before I got the car, the guy who sold it said it was unused (liar), clearly not much used though.
The steering servo was broken when I got it, changed that. The exhaust spring broke today. Will probably swap to the high flow muffler that is supposed to do a bit to the horrible noise. Also broke the front right lower arm, will go for alu-GPM ones to replace.
I am holding my thumbs that eventually I will be as happy with the car as Hemistorm finally became :)

Unless you look forward to breaking/bending your new a-arms I wouldn't buy aluminum. Aluminum doesn't do well in parts that need to bend and flex. Stay with plastic if you want any chance at longevity with them.

Yup, RPM makes some of the best parts ever..... I use them all the time and they last and are cheep to boot..... from 1/18 size stuff all the way up I put them on every rig I have that they make parts for.....

RPM's now on order :)

Also bought some aluminum to make my own skid plate. Heard about a lot of people ruining their brake discs. No wonder, when they are so unprotected under the car. Will also prevent stones and sand etc to get into the drive shafts etc from underneath. Why didn't they put some kind of protection there to begin with?

I was thinking, RPM uses nylon, you say. 3D-printers can print using nylon. Did anyone try making their own parts, using a 3D-printer?

I haven't got my own 3D-printer yet, but when I do, will I be the first to try? I don't think so, some-ones bound to have tried already :)

yup, your right. I've seen plenty of people make parts with them. although none on here that I know of there's a couple on ultimate rc forms and rcsparks forums that do, though.
