I just put a new spur and clutch bell on my truck and i put the paper between the two but it was so tight i couldnt move it with my hand is that normal before you run the car or is that too tight?

Fold the paper in half and try again. There are lots of thickness's of paper. I have had this happen when I was learning to get it correct at first as well.

Was it too tight to turn by hand with the paper in or out? With the paper out, there should be just a little bit of play between the CB/SG. There is a link inside the posted link on how to set the mesh correctly. Good luck!
I took the paper out it it was very tight no play at all.

I will try this out thanks for the info.

Is it tight all the way around or just in certain spots? If its tight all the way around you probally just need more space between them. If its only tight in certain areas you may want to take a look at the engine mount, see if its cracked or mounted oddly. Also, did you check that the CB was spinning freeing (shimmed correctly) before you put the engine back in?

the clutch bell spins freely but i didnt get any shims or anything with it. it seems tighter in certain spots but i didnt see anything wrong with the engine mounting.

i got frustrated trying the paper meshing method. if you put 1 index finger on the cb & 1 on the spur & rock them back & forth, you will be able to feel the amount of play.

its good to get used to feeling the right mesh because you can easily check it a few more times before loctite-ing down the mill mount in its final location (it could shift a bit during the process).

still on my original plastic spur gear btw & yes, if it doesnt rock b&f about .5 mm, then its too tight :jamout:

on my xss i found a trick when i take out the engine to do a look over and to clean it the mount is alomost flush with the engine plate and tvp and i have a smooth gear mesh but i still do the paper thing just to check.

Maybe seeing it in action will help you out a little

As long as the clutch bell spins fine then lightly press your finger on one side of the clutch teeth to the spur. Hold it there lightly and then slowly tighten 2 screws of the engine till they are loose but catching on the chassis. Then put the other two to this point. Slowly tighten the original two. What might be happening is that you are turning one screw and that is moving the point of the engine and pulling it. Just like when you tighten your 1:1 tires down or seal anything to water or air tight.... you do all sides slowly and in a star rotation.

If you can get it tight and the mesh is fine then you are done.

If it is still tight then the issue might be in the tranny or the engine mount. Basically, something is not sitting right. I bought a Jato from a bud and had the same thing. It took me removing the transmission and the engine and reseating everything so that it was all installed right. Once I did that then setting the mesh was very easy and the clutch rolls super smooth now.

Hopefully this will help you???? 🙂
