Hey guys I didn't know where to post this so sorry if its in the wrong spot. I was so happy with the savage 25 I bought the other week from my LHS that I bought a Savage X SS kit #861 so I could take pride in knowing I built it from scratch. I have a few questions though. I see there are a lot of individual threads about diff shimming and things of that nature but nobody posted a thread on what you should do to your truck as you are building it. are there certain things I should consider doing to this truck as I'm building so I don't have to strip it down later to do? like shimming the diffs and sealing the motor?

as far as the diffs go with the savage x models your half way there as they already have the 4 bevel gear diffs installed which are stronger then the 2 gear setup thats on the sav 25 i think somone did a writeup about diff shimming here but i might be wrong!! i know for a fact theres vids on you tube about rebuilding diffs and stuff so that may help!! if not hold on for a bit and i know someone will speak up that can help you better!!!

Just follow the manual. I had no problems doing step-by-step and it was all ok. The only thing manual doesn't say is to threadlock pullstarter screws and carb lock pin. (I lost mine and I'm waiting 4th week for delivery). Good luck!

yeah I have no problem building the truck but i was just hoping to find a thread that has some "what you should do's" when building a truck from kit form that would be more beneficial to me before i get the whole thing built and then someone says well you should have done this to make this better. you feel me? maybe ill just go through and read all the tutorials and somehow incorporate what I want to do in my truck. thanks for your help though

Diff shimming frankly speaking is stripping gears inside the diff so U don't have the power output to wheels.

hey while we're on the topic of diffs can someone explain to me what diff shimming is???[/QUOTE

you use little "washer" type things to install in your diffs (shims) to take away all the "play" between the gears this is diff shimming!!!

ok dude DO NOT answer questions to which you obviously do not know the answer to!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Diff shimming is adding shims(spacers) in various places (between pinion and bearing, between diff cup/43t gear and bearings) to reduce the amount of freeplay between gears and attain the proper "BACKLASH"

Other than sealing the engine and shimming the diffs, most things you can just replace as you break them. There are however two very simple and cheap things I would suggest because its just easier to do while the truck is apart and you should do them anyway. First take the servo you were going to use for the steering and instead use it for the throttle/brake. Then purchase a cheap servo like THIS , which is more powerful. Then get 4 of THESE bearings to replace the stock bushings in the steering servo saver. This will make a much smoother/quicker steering.

I'll back up savageXss1337 100% on both suggestions. Definitely worth the small price since you're going through the work already. If you decide to add reverse at some point you could use the stock throttle/brake servo for that duty or something, so definitely don't throw it away.

Are you serious? don't reply to posts if you have no clue what the hell your talking about. stripping gears so you don't have power output to the wheels? thats the most assinine thing ive ever heard someone say.

I have a hitec hs 645mg steering servo. its pretty badass
On your 25 or for your new X SS? So you know how good of an upgrade it is for 30 some dollars. You know, now that I'm thinking about it, if you have a few extra bucks sitting around I would recommend getting THIS full bearing kit and THIS full screw kit. That way your covered if you lose a screw or a bearing seizes.

sorry my mistake. read it on some other forum. My english isn't too good then

Good call on the kits. i acutally have the 645 on my 25 and bought another one. only this time i bought the one that goes to 180 degrees the one on my 25 only rotates 90 degrees. I'm going to shave my casters and knuckles to maximize my turn radius. The servo is def worth it for the $40 I spent on it.
