Hi all. I'm fairly new to this. I bought a fairly new savage x. It has a brand new package of alloy diff cases. The factory plastic are installed. i was wondering when I go to change the grease in the diffs should I install these or leave the stock ones in? I'm looking for the pros & cons. Any help would be appreciated. Is there a better diff to go with? Thanks in advance Rob.

i got them with my x as well, and what I'm going to do is order 2 sets of the 4bevel gears to put in the alum diff housings so its all new!! nitronutzz on ebay sells the 4 bevel gear kits for $8 so why not? but alot say wait till you need to replace them so i guess its up to you but if you have the alum diffs all shimmed and stuff there really tough!!! as far as a better diff the cen genisis diff is pretty much bullet proof and with modification can be put in a savage!! theres a good write up about it on rcbasher.com and i've heard going with silicone diff fluid instead of grease is a better idea!!

Are you talking about the case like these http://cgi.ebay.com/ALLOY-F-R-DIFFERENTIAL-GEAR-BOX-Fits-HPI-SAVAGE-X-S_W0QQitemZ130198584765QQihZ003QQcategoryZ44015QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQ_trksidZp1638.m118.l1247QQcmdZViewItem

or the case inside that that houses the 4 spider gears?

the X should have the alloy case that houses the 4 spider gears already. (I think anyway, both my RTR and XSS did.

If your talking about the outer case the pros are they only should need once, they don't wear or flex like the plastic do. the con's are they are not easy access like the X style plastic are. I wish someone would make some easy access alloy case's I would buy them.

Hope that helps

i hear that the alum bulkheads are the way to go. less flex keeps the gears wear they need to be so you don't strip them do to flexing in the plastic

Hi,

Reading what I wrote, somehow I missed a word, in this line "If your talking about the outer case the pros are they only should need once"

should of said,

"If your talking about the outer case the pros are they only should only need shimming once in a great while or even just once"

I have them in one of my trucks, I didnt even shim them and haven't had any problems with the diffs at all yet. "Knock on wood":Xfingers:
