ive stripped many spur gears and i need some help with meshing them right so if anyone has any tips they would be very appreciated. and i have a dynamite mach 26 and I'm using a 13 tooth clutchbell with a 52 tooth spur gear. this is what hpi recomends for the .21 stock engine, should i use a different spur gear or stick with the 52 tooth?

cut s small slip of paper and put it between the CB and the spur. Adjust the mesh so that the spur will turn the paper through without tearing it. This is how I set my mesh and haven't had a problem since.

This is the way I set my electric's mesh. I was told nitros like it a little tighter than that but I could be wrong. I usualy push the engine to the spur and back it up just enough to get it all turning freely with no binding all the way around the spur.

turn the spur gear with a finger and feel the amount of movement or "play" there is between the spur gear and pinion gear. There should be very little play, but you should feel a little bit. This is the correct gear mesh. With practice, you will no longer strip any spur gears.

Benny, sorry to hear your chasing the spur gear demons.

do what these guys said, start by installing everything with the paper trick.

then go back and hold the spur in one hand and wiggle the cb with the other, there should be a little play as nissan said.

good luck

This might sound silly but when I first got started, nobody told me to use lock tight on the screws that hold the engine and it kept moving. I guess its one of those things people assume you know. Good luck bro

thanks guys for the help, should i stick with the 52 tooth spur gear or should i use something else like a 49 or 47 tooth? (I'm useing a 13 tooth clutchbell)

I would change the cb to a 15 tooth, the 13/52 combo is crazy low for a 26. I'm suprised it's not just fliping over with that 26 in it.

yeah i was looking and doesnt the savage x use a 15/47 combo? and does anyone have a spare i5 tooth cb there willing to get rid of because i still have to get a fuel filter or two, some new fuel lines, a new spur gear, and tire glue and my cash supply is very low

The Savage X RTR uses a 17/47 combo, according to the manual and parts list on hpiracing.com.

The Savage X uses an 18/49 combo or 15/49 combo, both 15 and 18 are listed in the parts list on hpiracing.com. However, I can't find any clutch bell listed in the parts list in the manual.

The Savage X SS uses a 17/47 combo, according to the manual.

I got all the manuals from hpiracing.com and looked in the parts list there.

oh so u should i use a 15/49 or 15/52?

15/49 is a 3.2666666666666 gear ratio
15/52 is a 3.4666666666666 gear ratio

they are very close, imo

The 3.2666666666 is closer to a 3.000000000 ratio which is great imo
not too low and not too high.

disclosure is: depends on each engine, they all create the high horsepower at different place's in rpm band.

the spurs are the cheapest way to play with you'r gearing.
