I fixed the link, SJ need your opinion. I put this in here in case anyone else would find the info helpful.

Shim those bearings and the 13 tooth bevel gear, that will fix it.

I keep some play in mine but not as much as you have. I would clean the diff cup out and mess around with shims as said before. If your diff is clean it's just easier to work with shims, then once you have a setup that has minimal play pack the diff cup with grease again.

thank you, do you now the part s # for shims?

I know they are here somwhere

Thanks,

Thats a nice video, now I am sure what you guys were talking about. I thought that was it but I wasn't 100% sure.

The shims do they go next to the bearing on the outside next to the cup or on the inside next to the gear side? The 13 tooth is the one that goes to the cup that connects to the transmission? Same question on that one Does the shim go on the outside or the inside?

thanks,

John

This is the 2 sizes of shims you will need ..

You want just a little of play (very little) put a shim or 2 (diff cup side) to push the diff bearings OUT so they sit tighter against the diff case.

Then shim the 13 tooth out .. (one shim did it for me) This will push the 13 tooth more against the 43 tooth.. Just make sure you don't over shim the gears too tight

thank you guys. I knew you had the answer SJ

They are still running smooth, this was just a inspection.

Once I get the time and my hands on a decent camera I will to a really nice HOW TO .. shim diffs thread .. I know we have a couple floating around but . you really can't tell where the shims go ..

that video I posted is from a HD video camera, it also has 12.4 megapixel

pictures. Its incredible. You loose alittle quality in you tube.

Ok, so the goal is to get the 13 tooth and 43 tooth gears together more, but not too tight, now I think I have a pretty good idea of what's going on.

thank you much,

John

Yep that's the goal, and making sure your eliminate side to side movement

thanks again!!

I am planing on upgrading the diff's on my savage x RTR, It came with all standard stuff so I don't think the diff's will last long. I am trying to figure out what parts to use in the upgrade, I think the Nova diff cups are a must but I am not sure abut the parts that go inside, what are the best gears and other hardwaere to put in the diff's/ I have only seen the stuff from HPI is there any others to look at/

thanks,

John

lol.

My diffs FINALLY came to an end at 10 gallons 6 being on the S-25 and the other 4 on the STS .28.

Yeah, from what Ive been reading my rTR's diff''s wont last too long, I haven't shimmed them either. I am just starting to research them to find some good ones.

btw, what is the spur gear, I thought it was the gear that the clutch bell gears mesh with but I have seen it called the transmission gear. the rTR one is plastic, seems to be holding up so far. I see you guys talk about the spur gear a lot, is it in the transmission?

thanks,

John.

No the spur gear is out side of the tranny. it spins the clutch bell/ or the clutch bell spins the spur gear.. Its the larger (usually plastic) gear on the tranny

that's what I thought it was but the other day I saw an ad that mentioned the spur gear and the transmission gear like they were 2 different parts so I wasn't sure. Thanks for clearing that up for me.

IThe spur gear on my RTR is plastic the one that came with the sS is metal, A lot of the parts re different (better) tht cme with the SS thn the RTR.

Does anyone other than HPI make the gear's for inside the Diff's? I should ask Are the ones (the upgraded diff) that HPI sells the best, strongest?

Thanks,

John

Wow, I would have never found those. The hpi ones are not spiral, are they?

I just learned the other day when I called HPI their message said "HPI and Hot Bodies support, I didn't know they were the same company, and I would have never known the parts for the hot bodies would be compatible with the savage's.

Just when I think I am starting to scratch the surface on the Savage book of knowledge, I find out there is a whole volume of books I never even saw yet. I guess it never ends?

do you know of any gears for inside the diff cup that are stronger than the hpi ones?

thanks for your help
