I can’t find any drawing of the starter gear box that mounts to the rear of the motor. Mine all of a sudden quit spinning the motor over. Pulled it apart and makes no sense on how it works. Any help
Would be great as I’m dead in the water. Either a pic of how it supposed to look inside the casing or some. Something is missing cause you can spin it either direction. And I know that when it spins the wrong way it do not engage with the motor only counter clockwise. But not it spins both ways. Again any help would be appreciated i hate to have to buy a whole new one.

Thanks,
Dale

Hi Dale,
By "starter gear box", I'm guessing that you're talking about the Roto-start backplate.
Something that looks like this. Either that, or you have a pullstart...

If you remove this, you will find the one-way besring - which looks like the 2nd pic above.
It works like its name implies. It rolls freely in one direction and grabs when turned the other way.
If it turns without grabbing in either direction, it probably needs to be replaced (and the new one given a drop one one-way lube).
I say probably because you should try retesting the one you already have after cleaning and lubing.
I say this assuming that the roto-shaft backplate itself isn't compromised.

You have other issues if it grabs and spins the shaft when you try to turn it, but the engine isn't turning over (crankshaft rotating / piston going up and down).

Is it the f5.9 or the k5.9 ? Not shure but it the 1way bearing inside the engine -backplate on the k5.9 ?? N sounds like 1way bearing is slipping ? Just add same problem wi a diffrant engine but gave it a real good clean n left it to soke overnite n it did the trick hopefully you can 2 if it’s the k5.9 coz that’s a real hard part to get 👍

Yes that’s what I have other than mine is only a 3 bolt pattern. Yes it does spin both ways. But you’re saying to clean it up and relube it and it’s possible to live again and work? I’ll give it a try, but if it doesn’t can you direct me to where I mite find one here in the states?

Thanks,
Dale

Let me add when I did pull it apart the packing plate on the bottom was full of metal shavings so I figured something wasn’t happy in there any more!!!

I probably should have accounted for the differences between the K5.9 and F5.9 OWB specifics - but I got lazy.
Yours looks like below?
If so, you'll have a hard time finding the complete set-up these days as they have been discontinued.
You can purchase the bearing itself (HF 0612) and remove and replace it in the holder.
On the other hand, you mentioned shavings...

By "Packing plate", I assume that you mean the crankcase cover and the shavings are inside the engine.
If that's the case, odds are high that you have had a catastrophic failure of some sort and that the shavings have made their way into the combustion chamber or rear crankshaft supporting bearing.

The shaving were in the starter back plate not in the engine back plate. If that was the case it would be garbage for sure.
Mine is that exact on the left picture. The picture on the right, is that the bearing removed from that part

I pictured both because the part number that you need (15294) has long been discontinued.
You can sometimes find them on eBay but odds are that you are best off buying the bearing (the right pic) and pressing the bad OWB out of the holder and replacing it (pressing in) a new bearing.Just be sure that you orient it so that it turns the engine the proper direction.
Take pictures before you do anything so that you have a visual reference.

Given that the shavings you found are contained within the Roto-start - and external to the engine - you could be a lot worse off.
You can always buy a new Rotostart.
Where are the shavings coming from and can you reuse the Roto-start mechanism or have something like gear teeth been broken off?
