Hi
My name is Adam Winsor and i just bought a Savage x 4.6. After reading the manual i was wondering if during the first tank of fuel should the wheels happen to be moving while idle should i adjust the carb. This is my first break in. Also should i be fine with 20% 16% lube nitro?

Thanks

kool, also, should i follow the manual break in or the one on the site, i noticed the sticky for beginners, 3-4 tanks in the hpi manual and 8 tanks from this site?

it is also best to breakin your engine for as long as you can so if you can do more than 4 tanks for the methord your useing that would be great. if you break in the engine in for a long time you should have a better life span for your engine and better performance.
good luck and welcome to the forum!
4x4

Alright, so you recommend the 8 tank break in? seems to be alot better for you engine. I have a t-maxx with a picco motor that was broke in when i got it. So i'm new to the break in part...

Thanks and you'll be hearing alot from me too. I'm glad i found this forum.

In the new way of breaking it in. When you are driving it around for 2-3 mins should you be giving it full throttle or 1/2 or 1/4?

you don't want to give it full throttle until after break in because full throttle will do the most damage to your engine. as you have already found out this site has a lot of very helpful guys on it and they have helped me out with every problem i have had!
Welcome to the site!!!

alright, i'm not sure if i'll break it in the old or new way. The new way scares me alittle, maybe i just worry to much and wanna to it right.

Savage X , i love the sig by the way, my t-maxx is in a box aka (coffin) until sometime in the future. Sick of fixing that bastard.

I never know the difference becuase my friends had T-Maxx's, never seen a savage bash until i meet this random guy with one. So we went for a bash and not long after i was on the side lines fixing the maxx and watching this guy put on a show for me... the stuff is was doing with the savage made my t-maxx look like glass.... **** you traxxas... **** you, looking forward to my new basher

Everything went great, Broke her in using Heat cycle method, 8 tanks... Running nice and sounds perfect. As i was breaking her in a guy heard the sound of the savage and came over to talk, he was also a fellow savage owner. Anyways what i'm getting at is that he insisted that i switch fuels. My local hobby store only carries Sidewinder fuels, backyard basher 20% 16% oil and racing fuel 20% 12%.......should i switch to better fuel meaning i have to order it in and pay big dollars for better fuel?

Also my stock glow plug was done after tank 9...... glad i had a mccoy on hand

also thanks to everyone for the advice, can;t wait for the weekend bash with my buddies.

Cheers

i use sidewinder 20% nitro and 16% oil and my truck runs great! some people don't like it as with all the fuels out there but i haven't had any problems, good temps, and engine runs great!! i wouldnt switch as morgans which makes the fuel is a world class racing fuel company so it must be fairly good! plus i wouldnt pay big bucks for shipping the other stuff when alot of people are happy with the backyard basher but its up to u as I'm sure u would get 10 different answers to which fuel to use from everyone so your choice! lol

Hey guys, new member.
I didn't want to make a new thread so I'll revive this... two week old thread hah.

I just got my first savage. I didn't find this site until now basically.

I read my manual a couple times until I felt comfortable starting this guy (My first nitro as well). And then spent a good three hours tonight breaking it in then doing some mild tuning.

I only did 4 tanks on the stock carb settings like the manual suggests. You guys are suggesting twice that...Am I at risk of wrecking my engine?

I adjusted the idle a bit, and the afr's so the engine runs around 210-220 degrees. Still smokes quite a bit so I presume its still good n rich.
Played with it for a couple more tanks, never opened it right up on a run. Maybe once and a while I would punch it full throttle from slower speeds but not at higher.

So yeah...Just wondering if I should be worried.

Thanks man.

Yeah, I got a bit freaked out there. Only damage I want to keep under my belt will be the scratched heat sink on my engine from flipping it today hehe.

Yeah i'm going to stick with the racing mix from sidewinder. Seems great to me, I was pretty much wondering if it was like a big no no in the rc world but, i couldn;t dig up much bad reviews on it...
