Hi

My plans for building a E-Savage have changed just a little bit, I came across some of the1/5th scale conversions some people have been doing to there Savages and it got me to thinking how neat it would be to make a 1/5th scale 2WD Savage Buggy. I'm making my own chassis anyways, and it wouldn't be all that hard to make a TVP buggy style chassis, and use Baja B5 wheels & tires in the front. with the extra long HD axle to make the front end wider. What do you guys think of this idea, has anyone ever tried doing something like this?

Hi

I have run into a problem, I can't find any 24mm hexes that will fit the Savage axles. The ones I wanted to get are discontinued.

i've tried the 2wd in a 1/5 scale and i would bust diff every run no matter how good my diffs were shimmed

i've initially tried a diff locker in my center diff, then put silly putty to have "some" give, then move to 500K diff oil...gave up after countless diff pinion gears busted...this was also on the lowest torque setting

i moved back to 4wd with a center diff and no issues

also the 5B are super heavy not sure if the extended axles be able to handle it on jumps

The baja 5b is 2wd but pretty sure the rear diff is much stronger and bigger than the diff in the savage. If there was a way to fit that into a savage it'd work. But by that point you're probably better off just buying a baja

Hi

I have done quite a bit of reading on converting the Savage to 2WD and I have noticed two things in all the posts I have read.

1.) The Savage as is, is physically not designed to be run as a 2WD truck, it's too short and the front end is not setup right for the steering to work properly as 2WD, and because of this the Savage drives horribly in 2WD.

2.) The other thing I have noticed is that every one says its hard on the rear diff and they will strip it out, and after reading all the posts against doing it, most people just decide not to even try. But here is the interesting thing, I have only read about 2 people who have ever striped the rear diffs while driving in 2WD.

I am planning on making a longer chassis, and tilting the front end upwards just a little bit to make the steering more compatible for 2WD. As for the diffs I will be using the H.R. diff gears, I have heard they are quite strong and can take a beating. I can always change it back to 4WD if it trully doesn't work out as a 2WD.

Let me know if it works out I wouldn't mind going back to 2wd to keep the cost down on my rebuild ... I kinda like the 2wd rooster tails

As far as handling I put a lot of toe in on the rear tires and trimmed the front turnbuckles to give a little more throw and put heavy diff oil in the rear ...extended chassis I would recommend as well ...swaybars help alot out too

Hi

I swear I'm on the verge of giving up on this project, my current problem is the shaft for the single speed conversion kit is too long, I can not get the two halves of the tranny case to screw back together without the bearings locking up. It's like I'm taking one step forward and two steps backwards on this project.

Hi

I have decided to just stick with 4WD, I have also gotten one of the center diff transmissions from rc4me.US. At the moment I am using the X chassis to hold stuff together untill I biuld some buggy style TVP's. In the meantime here are a couple pictures of the progress so far. The second, third, and forth pictures are of the MIP X-DUTY CVD's I'll be using inplace of the center dog bones. I did have to shorten the tranny outdrives by about 1mm inorder for the part to fit properly.

What's with all the extra plastic bits on the rear? What's that from?

I run the rc4me super 5SC center diff trans in my flux HP with 700wt oil (mostly 500K with some 1M) on 4S with trencher 3.8's. The center diff made the thing very driveable. I can drive it very hard now compared to before. I used to have to feather the throttle so much that I'd need 50+ feet of runway to hit a jump. Now I can just punch it on the face of a jump like my outcast and send it flying.

Also helps the rear diff last longer. I busted 2 or 3 pinions before the center diff (about 6 months), and it's been fine since.

Hi

The extra plastic bits are actually on the front of the Savage and its one of the optional super 5SC bumpers. With this bumper all I have to do to get at the diff is remove 4 screws and the bumper flips right out of the way. I got the info for it from this link James' Garage . Another thing I am planing on doing is making a vertical motor mount so I can use a 1/6th or 1/5th scale motor.

Hi everyone

Project Savage 5B has been on hold for the last 3 1/2 years "no money to spend on it" but now I'm working on it again. The front and rear assemblies are about 95% complete, and the custom chassis is about 60% complete. I'll see about posting some pictures once I get the chassis done.

Hi

Here is are some pic's of my progress so far, the chassis TVPs are 3/16 inch thick each. The first pick shows the TVP's screwed together, the mounting plates for the battery trays and the dummy motor. The next pic is the template I made, and yes thats a NERO battery tray, at the moment I'm figuring out where all the screw holes need to go. The third pic is the motor mount plate, and the last two are of the rear end.

Hi

Latest picture test fiting the chassis , I still have to shave off a bit more wight from the chassis. Also any suggestions on a good servo that will fit the radio box and still be able to turn the wheels, I figure I'll need something with a high torque rating.

Hi

I am starting to come to the realization I may not be able to finish this project, not because I can't finish the chassis, but because I literally do not have the funds any more to get the electronics to complete this beast. I'm not sure what to do, the motivation just isn't there any more.

Hi

That's what I'm thinking too. and if worse comes to worse I can always go back to a standard Savage.
