hello guys, so in about a month or so I want to swap out my f4.1 and go for a lrp 28 or 30. I've already made it the styling to my choice , got gt5 wheels , a gt1 body (still need to paint) and a couple of xtras. Now I need a good power plant to match all its glory. I'm looking for a torque monster , easy to tune and holds a tune. any recommendations will be appreciated!

If it's just the X, not the XL, it's tough to drive with more than the LRP28 in it. I had that in mine for quite a while, then got an LRP 30. The 30 does really well, but the 28 did too.

What diffs do you have? If you don't have BP diffs, then you may have a hard time keeping them with teeth.

I have the X with stock diffs right now

Hi the lrp .28 is a great engine but if u go on novarossi direct you can get a
Rex legend .28-8 for $190.00

+2 for the LRP .30. I just threw one in my Trophy 4.6 and it has plenty of usable power. Trophy had the same powerplant as the Savage X. For AUD $240 it is pretty good value too ($188USD).

Just a word of warning - don't use the "starting point" from the LRP manual for break in, it is way to lean. The LSN suggested was 2.25 turns out and HSN 2.75 turns out. I broke it in with LSN 4 turns out and HSN 5 turns out. Was nice and rich but still idled really well.

Thanks for that important heads up provost. I wonder how they calculate they're settings but anyways think my savages stocks parts could handle the power of the lrp.30?

It can handle it. Maybe shim your diffs if you haven't already. I shimmed the front and rear diffs and pinions on my xl flux plus some 30k diff oil and it handles 6s without a problem (but I can't!). Before I shimmed them I went through a couple of bevel and pinion gears.

No I haven't yet , any link or steps you could give me to know how I could shim my diffs? I'll be surely getting the lrp.30

Think he said his was a savage-x. Those came with machined diff ring/pinion and alloy cups, but not the BP ring/pinion.

I got my X used, so not sure how good the diffs were when I started. I didn't make it through the break-in of the LRP28 before the rear diff died. I replaced both diffs with the sintered BP diffs and the super HD bones/outer axle cups many gallons ago and haven't had an issue since.

Doesn't hurt to remove the excessive play in your diffs. This is a good vid I used to help shim my diffs:

Good luck and happy bashing.

Hi the new lrp .28 is a six port I think u can get one at tower hobbies for$ 150
The novarossi legend 28-8 is an 8 port and is around $190 , there's also the nova .28 7 port for around $190 u can get the both novas in roto start form

Hey Greg thank you for the options! I've been wondering if it's possible to change those roto start novas to pull start ? Just for convenience I prefer it

Thank you so much provost !

Ok so I'll definitelybe shimming my diffs, and have made my decision on a LRP ZR.28. Enough torque to pull good wheelies and good top end which sounds like the ideal powerband for me! Do you guys think I should upgrade my dog bones as well?

Ah but I'm so indecisive idk if either to get a lrp 28 or lrp 30g, can anyone help out please?

Maybe compare the HP vs RPM and figure out which you prefer. You have a 3speed transmission right? I would go for less RPM and more HP. However will use more fuel.

I've read that most manufactures hp #s are bs. Not sure on that statement but it is obvious that the .30 does make a bigger horse number. And no I have a 2 speed transmission and I'm not too concerned on run times right now just want a good package. I enjoy doing hill climbs, high speed bashing etc I know any of those mills would be perfect for that

Do you have a savage X or XL? If the XL, I'd go for the 30, but if it's the X, the 28 will do fine. The 30 will do fine, it just has a bit more low end grunt than the 28, but the 28 has more high end. I've had both in my X.

Mine were the LRP28 Spec3 and the LRP30 Spec2.

I have the first gen X (f4.1) and were you amazed by both of them on your x? So the 28 is more capable of higher speeds correct since it's rpms surpass the 30s

The 28 does sound like it revs higher. However, if you do a lot of bashing in the grass, the 30 may be a better choice. I run 17/47 gearing on my X. I used the same gearing with both engines and both did well, but the 30 would get up to speed more quickly, especially in the grass. I tried out 18/47 and it did fine on concrete/packed dirt, but in the grass, you could tell it was really giving the clutch a work out to get up to speed, even though the engine had enough torque to deal with it, the 3 shoe alloy clutch didn't like it. So I dropped back down to 17/47.

Yeah it sounds like I can't go wrong with either but you made it sound interesting in your experience how you noticed the 30 got up to speed faster. I forgot what gearing I had but it's the stock gearing. Just with updated heavy duty clutchbell and spur. Which one do you prefer in general?

Hey olds have you heard anything on the novarossi 28-7 or novarossi hex 28-8?
