Hello everyone! I had finally had some time to get back out to the field and jump my savage around but thats where my problems had begun. The truch has been sitting for a few months now and today was the first time trying to run it. After fighting with the truck I had finally got it started and noticed right away that it topped out at about 15 MPH. Started to tune it. first I returned it all the factory with both HPN and LSN flush with the carb and started to lean out the HSN . The truck got a tad faster but still not what it has been before. Long story short I watched and read as much as I could before having to post and finally after 2 hours gave up. I can seem to get this truck to run faster without it being to lean and chocking. Also noticed it does not want to shift into 2nd. I have a tuned HPI pipe on it as far as upgrades. has had about a gallon through the engine so far.. Any idea?

Not shifting into second is one of two things; engine isn't reaching a high enough RPM, or the second gear clutch isn't set properly. Since the truck has been in storage and had the tune reset I'm thinking this is a tune issue.

Make sure to be tuning only when at operating temperatures, somewhere around 215-240 degrees. Use an IR temp probe on the head button for this. Keep leaning out the HSN as long as you get good smoke and the temps don't fly up. Also listen to the sounds your engine makes, it will tell you when it's happy.

You can make small adjustments to the LSN before finishing the HSN just to keep it running. But I would recommend doing the bulk of the tuning of the LSN ( in very small increments) when the HSN seems in a good place.

Aslo check your idle gap. When looking down the carb you should see about 1mm gap, but this may have to be adjusted per the motor.

One other question for you, have you changed out the glow plug? It's possible it needs replacement.

This happened to my truck when I got it, turned out my clutch was smoked. I also suspect I have a diff issue.

When troubleshooting, I like to eliminate things until I isolate the problem. Pulling the front and rear diffs, then running the truck should eliminate the diffs.

Tuning a Nitro engine was the bulk of my problems for many models. Somedays I just put them aside and come back to it and try again. Being determined to get a good tune will teach you alot. Once you get it and satisfied, you will feel as if you can tackle every engine...haha.
One thing my savage thought me was how the LSN effects idle, how LSN also effects HSN. Leaning the ldle stop sometimes requires richening the LSN a little to get a good idle. I found its always better to get a good tune on the HSN and then do the LSN. All them needles work together and finding a harmony was the hard part for me. But small increments and being patient each day, it finally clicked and I have a tune I am satisfied with. But knowing me....I'd tinker again on it...LOL.

But as Jr has mentioned, try to eliminate other mechanical areas first as their easier to figure. Settle them and you can easilly concentrate on the engine tuning. Take your time and even if your Savage can't run for weeks, just keep tuning cos One Day it will be a beast again!

How long did you have your truck in storage and did you used after run oil before storing it. I had this same problem with a truck of mine, it would not peak out and was getting hot. Turned out the bearings were rusted, once I replaced them it ran great, rust makes friction in engine. Hope this helps

I had a similar case with a buggy once. I took the risk and dismantled the engine ensuring nothing got scratched or gathered dust. Cleaned every bit even the bolts. Got rid of as much crud and gunk in the chamber and built it back up. Swapped out all the bearings and rechecked every moving part of the drive train greasing as I went along. Sometimes renewed TLC can bring it back to life. If your up to it, strip the truck down, clean what you can and grease it back up.

I had a simmular issue before, my slipper clutch was loose, just tightened the but up a touch and it was good to go
