Ok guys you probably have heard me talk about this for some time. But today i finally got this baby in motion. I picked up the Steering Crank Post (#86090) from my LHS and they are bringing in the STEERING CRANK/ SERVO SAVER SET (#85058) and the STEERING POST (#86319) by monday. Also a friend from the site is also hooking me up with two Associated DS1015 Hi Torque servos (200oz Torque ).

So as soon as my parts come in i will post up more updates. I just posted this early up to see what was going to be your take on this.

Sudi - Here's where I am in my 4-wheel-steer:

This is a 5" TVP stretch from RC-Cellar:

The issues I ran into are so far:
  • There is no room in the rear of the Savage for a rear servo
  • The rear of the TVP's do not have the room for the steering mechanism to pass through (I cut my TVP's to allow it to work)
  • Steering will be twitchy at best based on what I have read up on - I am planning on using the DX3S options and a third servo to mix it all together to make it work

Even with the stretch, you can see the servo fit will be tight - I am going to have the servo flush against the TVP, pointing downward

This is a rough cut for mock-up purposes, but here is a pic of what I had to remove for the steering mechanism to be able to pass through the TVP. I will reinforce the area with an overlay of the front of a stock TVP to give it strength back.

Mid-tank is just two pieces of angle pointing towards each other - here it is mocked up during construction:

Here is where the project sits now - mid-tank is done, I just need to mount the receiver and batt, throttle servo, and rear steering servo. Hope to be able to work on this in the next few weeks, now that Thanksgiving is past 🙂

BOB I'm planing to attach the servo on the outside of the TVPs and why do they say "Steering will be twitchy at best based on what I have read up on " isnt it the same setup as the front ?? and also have u figured out how to program the DX3S for it ? I'm planing to make it so that its just like 2 servo steering but reverse one of the servos and place it on the back
 
well, the front steering is as you say - just plain old steering. But when you countersteer the rear, it drives quite differently, and while a little play in the front steering is OK, it can cause serious wobble if there is too much in the back.

As for the rear steer servo being in the outside of the TVP - how are you going to attach the servo arm to the steering arm? They will be 90 degrees off from each other - push/pull won't directly work from what I can see, but i would would love to know - might solve my problem too!

never mind I just looked up and it was by rb innovations and they no longer make the kit.

Looking good guys. You may want to do something with the linkages so the rear does not steer as far or it will be hard to control at higher speeds. It may not be so long with the 1:5scale chassis you are running Bob but with a shorter chassis it may be a problem. You guys will have to see what you think. Report to us what you do so we all know. I think this is a great idea and would make it fun to drive and fairly inexpensive to do.

Well, here's what I am HOPING to be able to do. I don't know if I can, since I haven't looked yet, but I was hoping to be able to add the rear servo to the 3rd channel on the DX3s, and dial it down so when the front turns right, for example, the rear turns left, but only 50%. If I can't do that programatically with the DX3s, I can try to get the same results with the use of shorter servo arms in the back.

The real reason I decided to do this is that the turning radius of this beast is about a mile with only front steer, and the Jumbo Kong rims interfere with the steering if I try to clearance the components too much.

Sudi - How do you plan to get around this?

The servo and steering arm work 90 off from each other, just like the throttle servo and the carb linkage. No matter how hard I try I can't think of a STRONG way to do this (remember, I am running Jumbo Kongs).

Ok guys I am now oficialy jelous of Alex and his race savage so... I'm making my own and ditching the 4ws idea.

Here is my new shoping list:

- suspention convertion set + BBs ( they will be gotten at the same time since I don't want to have a million bent shafts)
- ace 1015 ( got this today)
-a set of sidewinder TVPs courtasy of Mickey

I will be runing the LRP as my mill and a spectum DX3S as my Tx

What else should I get?? Any pointers for a racing noob like me ??
 
what that servo run you sudi.. i was eyeing that one at the LHS myself.. i think i seen a tag of 90 on it but i believe the one i was looking at said XL on it.
