I'm about to do the mid tank mod on my xl and was wondering what parts do I need. I know some of them but not all of them. I want to go with the ofna 250cc for the tank. Links to all parts would be grateful. I'm kinda on a budget and as for flat plate alum, I have it. I can cut the plate my self but I don't know what else I need to mount it. I would need all the parts for the mod even any screws. I don't mind drilling into the tvp either as I will eventually upgrade with time. Thanks Terry

What you need:
Ofna tank
Tvp brace
Radio box
Servo mounts (for throttle and steering servo)
Ofna throttle mod (recommended)

and make the flat plate for the tank to sit on. I used 2mm, anymore than 3mm I think would be a little thick.

Ok, I think you summed it up there perfect especially with all the parts in one site. (cheaper on shipping) Now I want a 250cc tank it it. Which one should I get and what do you mean by hellfire mounts? Thanks Terry

EDIT: Also why 2 servo mounts and what about the battery?

Divey - Right on! I just finished the mod on my XL - here is the write up

https://www.hpisavageforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=13170

If you have any questions, let me know. Basically, I bought 3' of 1x1" aluminum angle to make servo mounts (one for the throttle, moved back where the tank used to be, one to relocate the steering servo), one Ofna tank, about 3' of 3/8" diameter alumunim rod (to make the mounts for the tank) 1 piece of 1/8" aluminum plate 2 7/8" wide by ABOUT 5 1/2 long), two cross braces (from under the motor mount), and a few other odds and ends - let me know if you need any help! I hope there are a bunch of good pics there that will give you more ideas.

Oh, and if you think I did any of that in a "shop" it was all done with a hacksaw, power drill, rasp, and file 🙂

Let me know if I can help!

Bob

Thanks for the info man. Ya I did read yours and followed it while you were in the making. I'm looking to do it but not spend so much cash on it. I have alum from 2mm to 4mm and I think I can pretty much get away with only buying a couple items here and there. I liked the angle iron idea for the servos, and the alum rod. Did you tap the rod so you could screw into it? Also how high do you mount your throttle servo since on the xl tvp there lowered there and we have to bring it up? Thanks for the help guys. Terry

ya i think I'm going to finally give in and do the midtank, mostly for the more run time with the larger tank so thanks for all the info guys!!

Well, few things:

1) Budget is good, but be careful - better to do it once RIGHT then twice - and since you are talking about the fuel tank, please just be careful
2) if you want, instead of using aluminum plate, you can also use the 1"x1" angle to make a tray between the TVP's - I did this on my 1/6 scale Savage:
gse_multipart116752.tmp.jpg

You will need to shave a little out of the middle to make them fit, but you can get all the aluminum you need for the tray out of one 3' stick...
3) For the throttle servo, all I did was take the angle iron, and put it down to touch the engine mount. Then I used a drill to drill the angle where the stock TVP holes are. This way there are no permanant changes.
4) One thing to consider, in keeping with the budget theme - if you use a remaining piece of that angle, you can mount the servo under your tray - instead of drilling into the TVP like I did. Remember, whenever you drill a hole in the TVP, you weaken it (to a very small degree) so minimize the holes you drill and try to make sure the holes are used for attach stuff that provides additional support.
5) I did NOT tap out the tank mounts actually. I cheated 🙂 I used a 7/64" drill bit, which is the perfect size for an M3 screw to self-tap. Just remember to use locktite anytime you have metal on metal, especially when the metals are different (steel & aluminum, etc)
6) If /when you make the tank mounts, don't drill the hole straight through. I drilled only 1/2 through the post from the bottom at dead center, and then about 1/2 through the post from the top, but offset to one side on purpose. This way when you mount the post to the tray with the centered hole, if you need some more room or are off a bit, you can rotate the post, and the off-set hole on the top allows you to adjust it a little - was a life saver for me.

This is pic is also on my 1/6 scale Savage, so you won't have this munch room up front, but you can see the tank in the tray made with the angle aluminum. I trimmed it down to the black line you see to make it flush with the TVP's after I shot this pic.

I hope this helps - I really really enjoy fabricating stuff from scratch, so if you need a hand - let me know!

I mounted my battery in a T-Maxx battery box mounted behind the engine on the TVP's - Before you light be up for using Traxxas, I had it lying around from my old T-Maxx, and i like the box, it has a charging port for the RX battery pack with a rubber plug to keep the grunge out. I did order an HPI rush battery box off ebay for $10 or so for when I break this one too badly... I used a balloon and zip ties to mount my receiver to the inside of the TVP's though - no RX box. I put self-adhesive velcro dots, the soft loop side not the hard hook side, onto the back of the receiver to give it some vibration protection - its not much but better than nothing! I put the whole thing into the balloon and zip-tied it behind the X on the left side of the TVP... We took it bashing a few weeks ago, and it worked like a charm !

Bob

Cool that will work. I'll check them both out. And Traxxas was my first rc. I have never had any problems with there products and there customer service is great. Anyways thanks for the info and I'll be ordering my stuff soon. Thanks Terry

i think you can use the fuel tank mounts from the hpi hellfire but not 100% on that because i think they might be to short.

Good advice Combuster, i use & love the Hellfire mounts with this tank. makes it very easy to install/remove the tank, plate, etc & holds it very secure in place.

I wanted to know if there is a way to run a bigger tank. Like some kind of airplane tank or something. How would i create the vaccum part from the pipe. I guess something like a one way check valve. I'm not sure but something bigger.

Alright, I'm ordering all the parts for the mid tank mod and the ofna throttle linkage mod. Is the RPM box for the reciever or battery? What would I need for a 5 cell hump pack? Thanks Terry

The RPM box is for the receiver box. I put my 5 cell pack in between the front bumper and the bulkhead. I just made a velcro strap to hold it in.

I am sure you could try a bigger tank, but why ? 250cc is a lot and it us always is good to let the motor cool down for a bit between tanks.

Combuster
Thanks for the links, the second one is on my list now.

Well the run time right now is about 10 minutes and that's 160cc so 250cc is maybe another 5-7 minutes. I'm used to electric and with this run time, it kinda sucks but I guess I have to get used to it. Thanks Terry
I think I have my list complete now so I'm ready to order. I will also be modding a skid plate from 4mm alum that I will cut myself. Once I get all the parts I will post my progress here. One last thing fellas, for the steering servo would you use the stock one on the xl or a hitech 645mg. I have both and was wondering because the other will be used for the throttle/brake servo.

Should make a thread in the Mid-Tank mod forum. I know we were all thinking that.
