hello all, i got a couple questions. i just came into this sweet Savage X SS i believe. it has SS on receiver cover. but anyways been running threw and trying to get her running getting new parts that were broken what not. and i was watching some rebuild on an engine and noticed the compression was fairly audible in the video. So after taking the spark plug out and the exhaust off and running the piston up and down there is very little to no compression at just making the piston make a full revolution but can hear a lil compression when ran a lil faster but not much. So First off would anyone know this brand of engine and if it would be worth rebuilding it(if i can find parts) or replace and what would be the best(price to performance) alternative that's out now and can fit. thanks in advance!

It's an Ofna / Picco "Outlaw" .26 with a Nova aftermarket cooling head.
I have its twin in one of my Savages and one with the stock purple head in another.

This is one of those engines that would be worth rebuilding if you could find the parts - but I doubt that you will be able to find them as it's 20 years old.
I last saw a piston and cylinder set for these on sale about two years ago on eBay.

I've never had an engine pinched but would consider that option on one of mine as I know their history and know that they've not been abused (well one of them has - but that's a long story) and it's never been done to either of them before (etc).

Replacement:
Of the engines currently being manufactured, I really like the LRP .32 - which I have on another Savage.
LRP also makes a .28 - but I have no experience with it.

Downsides to the LRP:
1. They sell out fast when you find them (AMain is currently out and have it on back-order).
They also list the .28 as being on backorder too.
2. They have a proprietary Roto-start backplate - but it's easy to find and purchase.
You just can't pull the Picco's Roto and move it over to the LRP.
3. I haven't yet had this problem, but many have reported that the carb goes south at some point
(talk to Vinni). Habao makes a carb for one of their engines that's a good fit and is supposed to
be tunable. If I start to have problems with mine, that's the direction I'm going.

RCR modifies and sells these engines too. They sell out - but not as quickly as the stock ones.
Stock - Amain is selling them for $221. This to me is the best price to performance engine.

RCR is currently asking $450 + shipping for their modified version on eBay.
Last fall these were selling for about $380.

Mine is stock and it is fast and has enough grunt to lift the front wheels going down the straight in 2nd gear (and I gear my Savages tall).
