I'm having trouble figuring out which transmission I need for my savage xl 5.9 I just recently bought a pre-owned truck and need to replace the transmission. The transmission I have in it has a plug with 2 holes on the side for adjusting not 3. Does it matter which one I use? Is the one I have 2 speed or 3? I've yet to even get the tune completed due to things falling off/apart so I don't know if it's 2 or 3 speed. The previous owner didn't use thread locker or maintain it very well, but I got it cheap lol. I wanna know if I can put any of the transmissions in or if it has to be a specific. Thanks!

You can use either a 2 or 3 speed tranny in it.

The only difference is the newer savage x you could take the screws holding the roll bar on and three screws out around the top of the tranny casing to service the internals. The older models you had to take the tranny completely out.

Ok awesome. I'm not really in need of 3 gears 2 will work plent well. I'd rather pay a fraction of the price for the 2 speed and upgrade to 3 speed later on if I want. Thank you for the reply!

Yeah thanks. I've gone to this forum a lot already. I've found tons of info! This is my third nitro and is my first savage. I had a t-maxx and a rustler when I was in high school and am just getting back into it. I actually snagged a tranny last night for $20 brand new off eBay. No reverse, but I have reverse in my truck now. I can can take that out and put it in the new one, correct? Worse case I only have forward for now. I'm actually starting to wonder if I even have an xl. The body says hpi 21 but it's only a body... I'm not too sure I can't tell the difference because mine has some upgrades on it. I bought it from a guy used and said it's xl 5.9

Dang! So I just bought a screw kit and a bearing kit for an xl. Those going to work then? I love the truck and it really doesn't matter other than the parts I've ordered.

Yes they'll work then only thing they did to the xl vs the x is bigger motor, longer chassis which obviously means diff drive shafts, and factory three speed tranny.

Ok. It does have +18mm extenders behind the wheels so idk if it's only wider or what. Seems to me that it's normal length due to the lack of room around the engine. This is why I was unsure if it's actually xl after researching. The guy lied to me a lot after I got home and really looked and researched. The tires I have on it are massive over 7" tall. What are the normal size tire size and if I change sizes do I have to re-gear the diff's or anything?

I do have 2 more question quick. My brakes were terrible so I replaced the single bad composite brake with dual steal disc brakes. How do I get it to have a lot less brakes. I barely touch the trigger and it endos/flips. I actually flipped it yesterday and that's why my transmission is all jacked up. I've loosened the plastic but on the linkage as loose as I can and still has extremely aggressive brakes. I've also lowered the travel on the servo, but haven't tried it out yet. When I push the truck and apply enough brake to grab there's horrible grinding in the transmission. That should be fixed when I put the new transmission in correct? I assumed just throw a new one in and be done.

Pretty sure the octane and flux HP use a different trans case than the rest of the 1/8th savage lineup. The spur gear is cocked more to one side. Also, the "flux" transmissions are single speed, HP, XL or otherwise. So, pay attention to what your buying.

To get less brakes, you either adjust your transmitters end point/travel (if it has it), or you adjust the linkage so the servo can move fully, or almost fully before engaging the brake. Depending on your setup, the old savage (and probably the new ones) had a thumb nut you could turn on the brake linkage wire. Unscrewing it so it's closer to the end of the wire will make it engage later in the servo movement and give you less brake.

I didn't care for the dual metal disks. As they wear, the center hex of the disk also wears, then they bind and chatter something awful. I much prefer the dual pink composite disks. However, you really need a center skid plate to help protect them. I busted a composite disk more than once due to a stick or rock getting jammed up in there. Then I either made a center skid, or got an RPM center skid that fit.

I had the dual stainless brakes too and they were a PITA to set up so they wouldnt grab. The stock X dual disc brake is much better. Also good luck with keeping diffs in the truck with those huge tires.

Ok cool I'm pretty sure the transmission is out of a .25 or the 4.6 can't remember. I got the brakes figured out some. Still a little strong for my liking. I even tirned the travel down. I'll have to go to the pink ones I've found some just need to get the cash, kind of spent a lot on it lol. I tried it out today and the transmission seems to be working fine. I tore it apart in lubed it slightly and put it back together. So I got to tune it in some more. Hsn is pretty much dialed in and I started the lsn by 1/16 of a turn so I don't over do it and it started to get real snappy. I ended up with a recoil spring snapping or something so had to stop. Every time I drive this thing something breaks and I haven't even really drove it only tuning. I should of bought a new one... but I'm going to put the new transmission in when it arrives along with the stock 4.6 big bore shocks. Went with those for now because they were in my budget. I really appreciate all the help guys it really helps. I've been out of the hobby for a long time and I've never owned a savage!

Yeah I don't like them!! They're cool as hell looking but idk I want smaller ones. He said that I can't just change them because it's geared for the bigger tires. So I'm sure I have to buy new gears or diffs. Idk I've been going over this truck thoroughly and there's no thread lock on anything stuff is loose or stripped. For the most part it's a decent truck and I'll get it all back to par. Just in time need cash lol it's expensive.

Nobody ever said this stuff is cheap :) but half the fun for me is taking them apart and modifying them to suit my needs....

Yeah lol I do like to modify too. Just frustrated with how many things I keep finding wrong with it. Just fixed the recoil and I'm debating on tearing out the transmission or throw the engine back in. The new one is supposed to be here Thursday.

I was texting the guy that sold it to me and apparently it does have 3 speed... idk I got the hsn pretty much dialed in and it definitely hits second but haven't heard it yet. The transmission has a lot of slop time to replace lol will be all in by Friday.

ok so if ur hsn is pretty good. now its time to make transmission adjustments. it might be that you have different wheels, clutch bell or spur gear than the dude you bought it from. you need to make sure you get 1st and 2nd done b4 you start messing with 3rd!!! good luck

I haven't touched the transmission other than tearing it apart to make sure nothing broke, stripped, etc. I accidentally locked up the brakes on the pavement and flipped it and after that it was grinding/binding up. I put it all back together and lightly lubed it up and it works great lol just really sloppy. Hopefully I got the brakes dialed in I don't wanna do that again... It's the same spur gear and clutch bell. I put a new clutch in but nothing else with drivetrain. The tires I have on it are 7.25" tall. I have a set of stock ones on the way.

so ur back to your stock trans? then if it has the 2 plugs on the side and OG it only a 2 speed. 1st should be good and 2nd get adjusted from the outside .25 turns at a time with the truck off. till you like ur shift points.
