Savage xl 5.9

Hi I just got a second hand savage xl 5.9 my problem is that it starts but in idal it still trying to drive the wheels and cuts out. In hi revs it ok but in idal it toys to free wheel but keeps jumping into gear any help

Check your linkages and reset the idle down a quarter turn and see if that helps any. there should be about a 1mm opening on the barrel slide as setup from the factory
