Hello guys I'm new to this forum but not RC. I am having a problem with my first hpi nitro truck I was told its a savage 25 but from what I can see looks like a savage x???? Below is pictures maybe y'all can identify it for me. I traded for it and was told it ran by hadn't run in a while.....I cleaned it up fresh fuel new flow plug and within 4 or 5 pulls it started. Ran for about 5 seconds and died starts on first or second pull dies within 5 or 6 seconds or as soon as you touch the throttle. I've tried tuning with every piece of tuning info I can find, put it back to factory settings far as I could tell and it does the same thing. Maybe half a dozen times its stayed running for 30 seconds but it always dies pretty quick....... Don't mind the Cen nx-26 engine sitting in it right now. I have included pics of the stock motor as well. I'd like to put it back in and my CEN Nx-26 back in my buggy lol.

Also I would start by getting the wheels off the ground, raise the idle speed a LITTLE, the lean the low speed 1/16th of a turn. Make sure the engine is warm. Use a hairdrier or such, get it 190 if you can. Then try to get it off idle if it stalls lean another 1/16th, and try again.

Ok guys my new carb came in the mail today ? I'm totally stoked. Going to install and test it. I was thinking the carb had issues since it had been sitting for only God knows how long before I acquired it. After having no luck tuning I ordered an HPI replacement carb

Ok update. I just spent an hour after putting a new carb on it trying to get it to stay running. Using the tuning flow chart I went from way to rich to too lean and back to roughly where it should be. However the longest I've been able to keep it running is 53 seconds????? I can snap the throttle maybe 1/4 of its pull and does ok until it just dies. I have the wheels off the ground and have adjusted the idle so it doesn't just spin wheels. I'm lost its got a new exhaust gasket and the head is tight and the engine has really good compression and start on first or second pull every time

Might be a leak on your exhaust, backplate or even in a fuel line. I would take the engine apart, inspect it, clean it and seal it with gasket maker.
Would be helpful to see a video of how the car dies.
Have you tried only one glowplug? Could be a faulty new glowplug as well. Also as mentioned above, could be faulty fuel tank as well.

I’m new to the hobby, bought my first nitro buggy recently but I’m quite mechanically minded being a mechanical fitter. I could tell my engine had good compression but couldn’t get it to start or if I’d did it only ran for 3-5 seconds. I swapped the glow plug and ensured all seals were good as well as ensuring any connections on the fuel line and exhaust connections, that seemed to do the trick and its up and running. Apologies if you’ve already considered all this but thought I’d share my experience in case it helped.
I’ve just bought a used HPI Savage X off eBay, should arrive this week so I might need a bit of assistance along the way.
Thanks in advance gents ??

Are you leaving the glow starter on the plug ? I would ! Till it’s warmed up

One of the other things I have overlooked in the past is a broken spring on a clutch shoe or bad bearings on the clutch bell. The symptons were I had to idle it up to keep it from dying and some funky engagement, although if you have it on blocks it should still run. Have you checked the gasket at the head/exhaust port to your manifold pipe? I also had the pickup in the tank break towards the top so it only got fuel for about 2 to 3 minutes. Hope that helps

Raise the idle rpm using tx trim, wheels off ground, wheels spinning is fine while the engine warms up. Keep blipping throttle to clear exhaust. Try full throttle off ground, if bogs, not easily revving then lean HSN. Keep feeling cooling head til it get warm, a temp gauge/gun is useful. Pinch at cold is not same when it is warm/hot. When stopped try turning flywheel over when still warm. don't know you ambient temp but cold ambient temps make for harder starting.
