Ok I guess I am 0-1 for posts now. I recently came across 3 monster trucks that are all nitro. I know what the one is but the other two I really have no idea. The savage I am not sure what model it is. I would like to just clean them up and the old plan was to get one running. Can I get some help on make and model on these units? Any help would be appreciated.16904974_10155037184446460_5945501761946379199_o.jpg 17016024_10155037184281460_6790915909855428693_o.jpg 17039235_10155037184221460_8748233865103722103_o.jpg

The Savage is tough, because several components that would help are gone or changed. The springs, wheels/ tires are not stock. But, because of the TVPs and the radio box this is clearly either a Savage 21, 25 or SS.

Pretty sure the engine that goes with it is a .21 with a purple cooling fins. Does that make it a Savage 21?

That's not the stock engine. All stock HPI engines have "HPI" as the brand on them (though several are actually rebadges of other engines), that one is a Vertex.

None of them say HPI. I have an XTM, the Vertex and a SMT I think. Would the Vertex .21 fit? It turns over and seams fine. I am thinking of rebuilding it. Or should I just buy a new one?

Most any big blocks will fit. The Savage has had anything from a .21 on up to a .36 nitro in it. In my opinion, the .21 will likely be a little underwhelming in the Savage.

LRP 28 Spec3, LRP 30, LRP 32 are all good for a savage.

However, if yours is a savage 21, it will not hold up to modern big blocks well. You will need to sink some dough into it to make it take a beating. The old savage 21 had awful diffs in it. They didn't get "good" until the latest models really with the BP diffs and Super HD outer cups/bones.

If you don't want to have to sink a lot of money into it, then a mild 26 would be ok. I'd still at least check the diffs and upgrade to 4 spider gears vs the 21's 2 spider gears.

I'd suggest a dynamite 26 if they all didn't have that stupid spin/pull start on them. That thing will break if you look at it sideways. A SH 28 isn't very potent and can be bought pretty cheap off ebay. It's what smartech has been putting in their rigs that I've seen lately.

Can find a hundred of them if your willing to wait for it to come from China. They are about $20 cheaper that way.

Looks like tower has the LRP21 in stock again:

I have a couple LRP28's and a 30, they are serious power. I would guess the 21 wouldn't be bad. May not have the torque you'd want in a MT, but if it is built as well as their other engines, it's a long running engine with minimal issues.

Horsepower ratings of nitro engines are all tongue in cheek. However, the ratings from the same company should be indicitive of the power output from one to another.

LRP lists the following:
21 - 2.12hp, 34,900 rpm
28 - 3.89hp, 33,500 rpm
30S2 - 4.12hp, 33,200 rpm
30S4 - 4.15, 33,600 rpm
32 - 4.37, 33,600 rpm

So, it would seem, the bump from 21 to 28 is quite a gap. I have an older version of the 30, spec 2. I listed it's specs from the manual I have.

This thread has a list of various engines all dyno'd on the same device:
https://www.hpisavageforum.com/threads/engine-hp-x-dyno.561/

The HPI engines up to that point were as follows:
HPI Nitro Star F4.1 0.94 @ 20,250 rpm 48.60 oz-in @ 18,000 rpm 33,500 rpm w/ kit n/a
HPI K4.6HO 1.28 @ 19,500 rpm 64.76 oz-in @ 19,500 rpm 32,000 rpm w/ kit n/a
HPI Nitro Star K4.6 1.32 @ 22,250 rpm 59.52 oz-in @ 19,750 rpm 35,000 rpm w/ kit $200

The LRP28S3:
LRP Z .28R Spec.3 Truggy 1.87 @ 27,200 rpm 70.77 oz-in @ 25,600 rpm 42,800 rpm

A bit of a car cry from the 3.89hp rating that LRP stamped on the engine. Still, would suggest the LRP21 would more than likely perform at or above the HPI F4.1, which is a .25ci engine.
