So I am new to the forum, however owned my Savage since 2005. I was trying to start it with the RotoStart, but the gears just kept spinning. I pulled it all off, and what it looks like is the one way bearing is shot.

So my question is if I buy a new one way bearing, do I just place it on the shaft, or is there additional work to be had. The shaft is round, so I just don't know if the one way bearing would go up like that or could the shaft have also lost the ability to hold the one way bearing into place. I looked at the instructions, and don't know how the one way bearing is held on to the back shaft.

Thanks for your help

Welcome to the forum! One ways tend to go bad and they are an easy fix You can try to clean the one way first with wd-40 and see if that fixes it, or get a new one way. Make sure you clean the shaft good and put the one way on the correct way. The one way slides over the shaft and sits in the roto start housing keeping it on the shaft. Hpe this helps you out

the needle bearings inside the one way bearing get forced into a cage that lock them onto the shaft in the engine. thus providing the necessary rotating force to fire the engine.

i have found that running paper towel through the bearing after a thorough cleaning of the bearing with a spray lubricant, such as allan discribed, increases the second wind of the bearing because there is no oil to allow slipping. unlike regular bearings, OWB's can function with or without oil. as long as the part they are locking onto is in suitable condition.

there are also kits on ebay that eliminate the OWB all together. such as THIS one. it replaces the shaft in the engine with one with a flat spot, allowing a custom OWB, with no bearings and a set screw, to lock onto the shaft, completly eliminating this problem all together.
