Removing reverse from transmission

I have a Savage X 4.6 with reverse. Reverse has been nothing but trouble so removed the servo and electric box. The linkage or fork that slides the gear naturally wants to slide to neutral. I took the transmission apart.
My question is does anyone know the best way to lock the little gear into the main gear or is there a replacement shaft or gear to accomplish this?
My idea was make a notch (3rd picture where the pen top is pointing.) in the shaft and use a C clip to hold the sliding gear inside the main gear.
I thought I might check on here first in case there is a better way.
Any help or suggestions appreciated.

Go through the manual for the reverse module. It gives all the original part numbers for the components that were removed in order to fit the reverse module.
