I picked up the new version of the picco .28 from www.smfstore.com. It has been modded by Robin of Extreme RC Mods www.extremercmods.com. Robin did an all out drag mod to the motor.
So far I am 1/4 gallon into breakin. I am going to be doing this review in a few parts so that the information is fresh in my head when I right it.
First thing is first the new picco has a two new things. A new cooling head and a new carb to fix the issues that the old style carb had.
When you get the motor out of the box you have to attach the carb. When doing this make sure to use the o-rings on the pinch bolt and the o-ring on the base of the carb. The carb fits very snug in the block so make sure that it is seated all the way down to avoid air leaks. The carb is a two needle style carb with stock settings on the carb being quite diffrent from most motors on the market. The HSN is set to 1/2 turn out from flush and the LSN is set to about 3mm out from flush as you can see in the picture above. I did have to set the idle gap as it was at nearly 2mm out of the box. It also has adjustible venture making adjusting this motor for your needs very easy. For racing you can replace it a smaller venture for racing to tone the motor down a bit and extend your fuel economy or put a bigger on in for bashing to pull every last drop of power out of the motor but with a lose of fuel economy.
Instalation is the same as any other motor. I paired it with a Ofna 086 tuned pipe, Motor saver airfilter, and a Fioroni twin turbo sliding clutch with 18 tooth clutch bell. The truck is an XL length carbon fiber Savage with a 250cc midtank conversion, three speed transmission with 48 tooth spur gear.
For Break in I went with Byron's 30% Race fuel. It is a high quality fuel with plenty of oil at 11%. I started by priming the fuel tank and it started second pull. I idled it up to 180 degrees than started doing very slow running going on and off throtal but being careful not to make sudden changes to throtal. I ran it up to 220 degrees than shut it down being sure to set the motor to bottom dead center when it was shut down. I allowed it to cool than fired it back up and repeated the same heat cycle process for the first 600cc's of fuel. After the first 600cc's I Did one more heat cycle running it up to 1/4 throtal.
Despite the fact that the motor is very rich and not being gotten on you can tell that this motor has insain power. With just the slightest touch the truck wants to launch forward like a rocket. Even at only 1/4 throtal it blows through all three gears. I am going to have to do some changes to shift points to get it shifting the way i like.
After another 250cc's of fuel never going above 1/4 throtal I had a talk with Robin from ERCM. He shared a few break in tips with me so following what he has told me to do I am moving into the second quart of fuel.
I recomend that anyone who gets a modded mill from Robin give him a call. He is more than happy to help his customers get the most out of their motors and give pointers on what to do and what not to do. He can explain all of the sceince behind what he tells you as well to help you understand how the whole process works from breakin all the way throgh getting it tuned up properly after it is broken in.
Tonight I started to open it up a little more but only for a very short period of time maybe 75 feet. The power this motor is putting out is unbelievable. I have badland tires on the truck and it has so much power that it spins all four tires without breaking a sweat. It also climbs up its RPM range very fast. The moment you pull the trigger the power is there and it is up to speed instantly.
More info to follow as I go throgh the break in and tuning of this motor. Sorry there is no video. I am doing most of this at night and it is to dark to take any video but some video will be coing this weekend.
