Hello. I purchased a savage used off of offer up. It has a transmission with 2 holes not 3 and the guy i bought it from said it was a three speed transmission. I asked about it having 2 holes on the side instead of 3 and he said it was because it is a very early 3 speed transmission and only has 2 holes in the side. Is it possible to have a 3 speed transmission with only 2 holes in the side?. I will post some pics tomorrow. Thanks for looking.

Simple answer is yes. The old Savage transmission case only had 2 holes in the side, this is the one that the top can not be remove. it splits in 2 halfs. You can put the 3 speed in it as the internal specs are exactly the same.
Basically both the new and old case are the same, the only difference is that the newer version is called "easy access" which means the top can be removed allowing access to the inside without removing the complete transmission from the truck, which we all know is a pain.

Thank you so much for your answer.

No worries mate 👍, this is one of the main reason the forum exists. For peps to get answers to their question. Asking question is how we all learn.

Just a tip, as you will find out the 3rd gear can not be adjusted from outside of the box on the early models, if you need to adjust the shift point on 3rd you will need to split the casing apart, adjust the clutch. put the truck back together, try it and if still your not happy with it, Rinse & Repeat. Right royal pain in the ass that. You could just buy a new 3 piece 'easy access case' or just drill the 3rd missing hole exactly between the 2 others and the same size as the larger one.
