Kind of a sad story here but I have had an I have had a Savage X SS sitting around since 2015. I got most of the build completed before the ex and I split ways. I did get the build completed but I never fired it up. I did not even get to the breaking in the motor part. 🙁 It was meant to be my intro to nitro rc. As of right now, I want to get this thing fired up.. I have a transmitter and receiver from when I originally planned on running it.

I do know that I am going to need to buy a few things...
  • Fuel
    • Anyone recommend a quality brand?
  • Igniter
    • Anyone put me to a quality one?
  • New foam air filter...
    • It crumbled some when I pulled it out to look at it
Anything else that I should look at getting to get this thing running? I wouldn't mind a RotoStart but that will be later. I rather put money into other things since it can be pull started. And, of course, any other information that would be useful would be appreciated.

Thanks a bunch...

Would anyone point me to a pull starter that will work with the Savage X SS 4.6 Big Bore MT? HPI shows the Pull Starter PN 15226 is discontinued.

I decided to take a trip to my closest rc hobby store (1.5 hours away) picked up some:
  • 20% fuel
  • a budget igniter
  • 2 filters

I got home yesterday evening and decided to do the first step the break-in. I read through the breaking-in steps and watched some videos on starting a nitro... Well, I attempted to start doing the first break-in, and... the pull rope broke 🙁. On top of that, the budget igniter was not working. It never lit up the glow plug..

I pulled on it, 6-7 inch pulls, until I saw the fuel flowing to the carb with no bubbles put the igniter on and gave it several pulls. The pull cord broke at the housing.

I was also questioning if the igniter I got was working. So I decided to take the glow plug out and put in the igniter to see if the glow plug was glowing. It didn't not. To keep this short I ordered a rechargeable igniter off Amazon.

Now I need to figure out what to do since the fuel was following. I emptied the fuel tank back into the fuel container. There is fuel in the carb and camber since it didn't fire up...

Good afternoon! I’d start with glow plug temperature and for fouling. it needs to glow all the way through the little coil. Don’t pull so far out with the recoil and if gets super harder/locked up pop the glow plug and get gas outta there it’s flooded. Carb stock settings and fuel 20% to 25% works. When running keep smoke running out the pipe but not so much you wasting crazy fuel and fouling your plug. And for the heater idk about those ones I e always used one that takes a d or a c battery and worked fine. It does help also to warm up the engine before starting. No torche or anything that will burn your savage!!! Hope you get it going!!!!! I have to finish my mods to the 3spd conversion.

Like i said i got it built but never ran it.... Never started it, Never broke in the motor. It was meant to be my introduction to nitro. Anyway. The budget igniter that I got was a C cell one. I tried to start it with it and it never even tried to pop off.. Pulled the glow plug put it in the igniter and nothing. I even pulled another C cell, fresh out of the unopened, and still nothing. I got that rechargeable LiPo igniter checked the plug and it lit the glow plug up nice and red.... Now I am trying find a pull start or roto starter that will work with this thing since the K Series parts seem to be discontinued. I need to clean out what little nitro fuel was pulled into it before it gums things up while I find and wait for these parts.
