Hpi K4.6 engine difgicult to start and when smokey.

My hpi K4.6 engine is extremely difficult to start and when it does it is really smokey. It revs fast for a short while and then stops. It then refuses to start again.
Have set the carb to factory settings.
Anyone got any ideas that can help please

Factory setting could be for break in purposes. You would want the engine running fat for the initial break in. Maybe lean out the high side needle a bit when you get it started. Might help out on the smoke part a little bit.
