I bought my Savage .25 RTR in Dec. 03. Like many others the first thing to go was the one way bearing. After replacing it several times I decided to make a solid one in the machine shop at work, (basicly a hex with a hole in it)and attach it buy filing a flat spot on the shaft and holding it on with a 6-32 set screw. I got some flack from it from the guys on RCuniverse, some even suggested the Roto Start gear box will turn while the engine is running but this simply is not true. Since then about 1/2 of my truck has been replaced including the engine but the homemade bearing still works great. It's not often I come up with a good idea so I was just wondering what you guys thought?

These types of deals are available on ebay once in a while and someone on our forum here has one and loves it. I wish I had one for my Axial .28's as I'm getting sick of the OWB's on them. If it works in my book its worth it.

yup...I've got one of the ebay ones myself...and you are correct, it will not cause your one-way gears to spin continuously...

Would it even work with a pull start because don't the piece in the back plate turn all the time because in essence its direct drive now, CORRECT????

When I replaced the one way bearing in my F4.6, I also changed the o-ring in the back plate that seals the starter shaft. It was part number 6899 5x8x1.5mm o-ring. It is also the o-ring that cushions the fuel tank. So far I have had no problems since replacing my one way bearing and o-ring.

i replaced mine with one from ebay. so far its been on two motors,i have the pull start on my axial now. with the roto plate the gears do turn real slow(centrical force) and had no problems.
the only problem with the pull start is i pulled the cord out of it yeaterday(my fault)

no, it has a secondary "one-way" system inside, with the spring loaded pin...it's a common misconception...

Komodo67 is right, there is a shot pin in back of your crank shaft that alows it to be turned over by roto shaft. Think about the shaft that the one way goes on and how it is "connected" to the crank shaft.

I have never tried it with a pull start but suspect it would work but maybe not as well. I think the main reason for the one-way is to assist the recoiling of the cord.

Another commen misconception is that if a hydrolic lock accures it will bend your connection rod....nonsence! Unless you have some super-duper powerfull starter (and it still aint gona happen) it just is not strong enough to bend it. I have been flying RC planes and helis for 25 years and have never bent a connection rod or even seen it done, that is not to say it can't happen but I just haven't seen it. Airplane starters are typicaly much stronger than a Roto Sarter too.

I've got a huge lot/box of broken motors...and quite a few of them have broken con-rods...I can get ya a pic if you like 😉 no idea if they happened due to any hydro-lock or anything...more than likely the owners were not following proper break-in procedures...

all is forgiven bud...no one should be expected to remember all of the info here on the forums...

if we were, there'd be no need for the forums...we'd all be know-it-alls 😉
