3 speed help please

hi, recently installed a k4.6 motor and 3 speed into my savage and i could do with a little help setting the 3 speed up , when i take off i can't seem to hear it shift into second and after quite a distance it eventually shifts gear with quite a clunk and then takes off usually lifting the front...
