New to the flux gang. Diff questions.

Just curios, did you use OEM bulk heads or aftermarket? The sintered diff gears are not the best. The Flux should have came with the 9? tooth Bullet Proof machined gears. It's a pretty good upgrade for the X and other savages. That's about the best diff gear at this point. BUT, I would love to...

savage xl 5.9 differential up grade

What about aluminum bulkheads? I found all kinds of old links on this forum, but I can't seem to find any that is currently available. Some of my screw holes are getting a little slopping from so much repair/maintenance. I think aluminum would be a bit more ridged then composite, and hopefully...

savage xl 5.9 differential up grade

Ya. that's exactly what I did, and just bought one the other day... When you can find specific parts, they seem to cost a bit more then they used to...

    Where to find parts??

thanks for the heads up, I wasn't exactly sure way they were called. I considered calling it a pinon gear, but that wasn't quite right either.

    Where to find parts??

No, I'm needing the 9T bevel gear for driving the diff. It generally comes as a kit (29T & 9T)

    Where to find parts??

I'm needing some diff bevel gears. I thought they were hard to find last year, but now it's impossible to find much... I was hoping to fix it over winter... :(

savage xl 5.9 differential up grade

Seriously, what's the deal with lack of availability of parts. I need the differential bevel gear, and can't find anything. Does HPI not want us to bash? I'm getting sick of always struggling to find parts.

    Good differential replacement

I've been out of the RC truck world for several months now as I try to get my (real) truck on the road after rebuilding the diesel in it.... Now that it's getting colder outside, I hope to have more time to fix the truck again. I will certainly pay more attention to the differential as I'm...

Rear locked diff in Savage XL

The way I understand it and the reason I do it is to prevent the diff from slopping side to side. You have to install shims between the drive shaft cup and the diff to prevent the diff mesh changing from slide back and forth. Maybe someone else can better explain it? I hear it's very important...

Rear locked diff in Savage XL

Do you disassemble them to shim them correctly for your truck? Or how do you shim them since there already assembled?

Rear locked diff in Savage XL

Wow, I'm glad I saw this comment! I just shredded my 3rd or 4th diff and was on the verge of locking it, but maybe I'll just keep on building them. Parts keep getting more difficult to find it seems. I almost feel like buying several kits and building several diffs at a time, however, I guess...

What did you do to your HPI Savage today?

I just bought parts to build mine. I couldn't fine complete diffs anywhere.

    Good differential replacement

Thanks for the tip! I should be getting the parts this week yet, and they're calling for rain on Saturday, so I may be stuck inside. Perfect timing to work on it!

    Good differential replacement

Ya, I ran into a shimming issue the first time. I got it shimmed where I felt comfortable, then I disassembled it to insert the pin, reassembled it and locked the screws down. And when I tightened the screws, it shortened up the diff and had too much play. So I had to disassemble it again to add...

    Good differential replacement

Seriously? How can you tell? Like I said before, I never had this particular one apart before, but I don't know what the previous owner did. Regardless, I will be replacing all the gears and will be using #102692 BP gear, #86827 housing and #87193 internal gears. Hopefully that fixes it up.

    Good differential replacement

From what I understand, and judging by the part numbers, the Flux HP already has the BP gears from stock? At least in the manual it gives #102692. That is the BP one, right?

    Good differential replacement

The way I'm shredding differentials, I wouldn't want another one to break! ;) I'm simply going to back down the punch control with the ESC to hopefully lengthen the life of the truck (until I can handle it better). I had backed it down a little bit already. It already had the XL frame, and it...

    Good differential replacement

When I rebuilt the front, I was amazes how much a difference 30k was then stock. Stock (or pre-rebuild) was very loose. That's why I was considering 50k for the rear.

    Good differential replacement

This was the first time I had the rear diff/bulkhead disassembled. Three of the four screw caps were snapped off that hold the differential together. It was really gritty, although now metal 'chips'. I'm not sure in what order things went bad, but there were quite a few things that were not...

    Good differential replacement

I inspected my differential a little closer tonight. Hmmm, I don't think I'll be reusing the spider gears. The one is chewed up pretty bad. Now I have to decide if I want to build a differential from scratch by using HPI 86827 & 86032, or lock it with Hot Racing's locker. I can't really find any...
