no worries surly :) tho the point we all been making, and your all are right ................. that is, that truck was worth every penny and worth the time cleaning it up then a nice new shell on top :)
look how the bumpers connect to the side of the towers, thats a give away too
older savages are screwed onto the towers the new savages have plastic clips
with out a doubt its an early savage x
this is what your looking for, if you decide to strip them down
1st pic shows where the piston just starts to pinch
2nd pic shows where you just cant push the piston no more, the pinch is too tight
if the piston is able to move right through the sleeve out the top with little or no force then...
with out a doubt, its worth doing up, you did well to get it for that price, you have a hobby now, relax take your time and enjoy it, thats what its about :)
just check both engines over and run them both, youll soon see which one still has some zing left in it
you could strip them completely...
it just a case of making sure the 2 gears are lined up and the mesh is right, as i said, some people put a slither of paper between the gears and then push the whole engine in so the paper is tight between the gears then tighten the engine bolts and take the paper away, that should give the...

sorry but id take the engine out to check the clutch and clutch bell bearing, its easy...
forgot to add, if you use skype then you can add me so if needed you can call me and i can guide you through what ever you need to get this truck running savage style
oh congratulations on stripping your first spur gear, we all have done that, please don't buy metal, keep that cog plastic it helps to stop you trashing your gearbox or other drive parts
another thing is ..... theres a spring and a nut on in the middle of that spur gear (plastic wheel) the tighter it is the less it will slip hence called a slipper clutch, on the back of that spur gear is a pinky pad when that wears down youll need to replace it
oh and joe i wished a few more people on forums would do a video or pictures of their problems, it makes it a lot easier for us to understand and figure it out, so a big well done and thanks
that plastic wheel thing i suspect you mean the plastic or nylon spur gear, you must make sure that the engine is lined up right, so the clutch bell gear (pinion gear) on the engine meshes with that plastic wheel (spur gear) not too tightly and not too loose, some wedge a slither of paper...
thanks all.........
