set your HSN, and LSN to flush, then you only need to adjust the large gold needle to get started tuning...you may need to lean out the LSN slightly.
turning it right will lean it out (less fuel, run hotter)
turning it left will richen it up (more fuel, run cooler)
i would suggest leaving...
sounds like its really lean.
do you have a temperature gun?
the boiling sound is fuel hitting the really hot carb.
i personally would set all of the carb setting's back to factory, and re-tune it.

it melted your last gear due to overheating the gear, which happens because the gear was slipping alot.
thats a good reason to not "launch as hard"....the power wasnt getting to the drive train.
make sure youe mesh is square as well as spaced with the notebook paper.
look straight down at both gears and make sure they are both square with eachother.
you can feel if the mesh is right by just rolling the spur gear with your finger, or rolling the truck on the ground.
